Bhubaneswar: A dawn-to-dusk shutdown called by Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad significantly disrupted normal life in Birmaharajpur on April 15. The 12-hour bandh, observed from 6 am to 6 pm, was organized in protest against the alleged tearing of a photograph of Lord Shri Ram during a recent procession.

The controversy arose during a procession organised on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, when a photograph of Lord Shri Ram was allegedly desecrated in the chowk . The incident sparked strong reactions among local residents and affiliated organizations, prompting the call for a shutdown.

Organisers claimed that the act was part of a deliberate attempt by certain miscreants to disturb social  harmony in the region. They further alleged that despite clear visual evidence in the form of photos and videos identifying the accused, no immediate action was taken by the police. This perceived inaction led to growing resentment and ultimately resulted in the bandh being called.

The impact of the shutdown was widespread across  Birmaharajpur and nearby areas. Markets, shops, and commercial establishments remained closed throughout the day. Both government and private offices suspended operations, while educational institutions, including schools and colleges, also remained shut. Vehicular movement was severely affected, with roads largely deserted and public transport operating at a minimal level.

Members of Bajrang Dal enforced the bandh by staging protests and picketing at various locations, contributing to the near-total shutdown of daily activities. Most residents chose to stay indoors, venturing out only for essential needs.

Authorities took precautionary measures to prevent any escalation of tensions. Security was tightened across sensitive areas, with police personnel deployed to maintain law and order. Continuous monitoring was carried out to ensure that no untoward incidents occurred during the bandh.

The administration also ensured that essential services remained functional and coordinated efforts among various agencies to maintain stability in the region.

Condemning the incident, Bajrang Dal demanded strict action against those responsible for hurting religious sentiments. Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation

It is being reported that some individuals carried out this act with the intention of creating tension in the area and fostering discord within society.
