Napoklu (Kodagu): Thousands of villagers gathered in Napoklu, a small town in the south Kodagu district, for a massive protest and awareness rally on April 1, following the March 27 assault on a Hindu worker, an incident that has triggered widespread outrage and strong demands for justice.
The protest, organised by local Hindu groups and community organisations, witnessed a huge turnout with people arriving from across the district. The gathering concluded with a public oath-taking ceremony, where attendees pledged to remain united, safeguard their community interests, and press for strict legal action against those responsible for the assault.
The incident at the centre of the protest involves a Hindu worker who was allegedly attacked by a group identified by organisers as “Islamist elements.” While police investigations are still ongoing, the incident has sparked anger among locals, with many alleging repeated instances of targeted attacks and demanding stronger preventive measures from authorities.
The programme began with prayers at a local temple, followed by a disciplined procession stretching nearly 2 kilometres through Napoklu town. Participants, including women, youth, and elderly citizens, marched with saffron flags and placards, raising slogans demanding justice, safety, and unity.
Addressing the gathering, several speakers strongly condemned the assault and accused authorities of failing to act firmly in previous incidents. “This is not an isolated incident. There have been repeated provocations. We are here to send a clear message that the community will no longer remain silent,” one speaker said.
Another organiser highlighted that the oath taken by thousands symbolised a commitment to collective strength and vigilance. “We have resolved to stand together, support one another, and ensure that no one feels unsafe. Unity is our greatest strength,” he said.
While emotions ran high during the protest, organisers also stressed the need to act within the framework of law. At the same time, they indicated that the community would adopt stricter social responses to what they described as continuous provocations, reflecting a shift in public sentiment after the incident.
Police had made extensive security arrangements in and around Napoklu to prevent any untoward incidents. Kodagu Superintendent of Police Bindu Moni personally monitored the situation, with more than 250 personnel, including KSRP and DAR units, deployed at key locations. Drone surveillance and video recording were also used to monitor the crowd.
Officials confirmed that the situation remained peaceful throughout the event, with no reports of violence. Authorities have urged citizens to maintain calm and avoid spreading rumours or inflammatory content on social media.
Speakers at the event also raised broader concerns, including issues related to law and order, social tensions, and alleged disturbances in the region. They called upon the administration to take firm action and ensure a safe environment for all communities.
Organisers announced that similar awareness programmes would be conducted regularly to keep the issue alive and ensure accountability. They also warned that if strict action is not taken against the accused, protests could intensify in the coming days.
Police sources stated that the investigation into the March 27 assault is progressing, and those responsible will be brought to justice based on evidence. “We are treating the case seriously. Law will take its course,” an officer said.
The large turnout at the Napoklu protest highlights the growing public response to local incidents and the speed at which such issues can mobilise people. While the protest remained peaceful, the strong sentiments expressed underline the need for effective law enforcement and timely intervention to maintain harmony.
