Kozhikode: Kerala once again witnessed disturbing scenes of political violence as clashes between LDF and UDF activists broke out at the Payyanakkal Government VHSS School premises, raising serious concerns over the breakdown of law and order during the ongoing Assembly elections.
The incident began around 5 pm on April 9 when activists from both fronts allegedly confronted each other over accusations of seeking votes using religious appeals. The situation quickly escalated into a physical clash, turning the school premises into a battleground.
Police intervened to control the situation, but when activists refused to disperse, a lathi-charge was carried out. Amid the chaos, Sreenivasan (50), a native of Chakku Kadavu, who questioned police action, was taken into custody by the Panniyankara police.
The arrest triggered further escalation, with CPM activists organising a late-night march to the Panniyankara police station, demanding his release. Police blocked the march in front of the station, preventing a possible siege. Senior CPM leaders later held discussions with police officials late into the night, while authorities stated that action would be taken following an inquiry. The episode highlights how both LDF and UDF continue to indulge in confrontation politics, disrupting public order and vitiating the democratic atmosphere in the state.
Pattern of Violence Ahead of Polls
The Payyanakkal incident is not an isolated case but part of a broader pattern of violence reported across Kerala in the run-up to polling.
According to a report by Organiser, CPM workers allegedly carried out a brutal attack on BJP booth agent Shyju in Mattannur, Kannur, on the eve of polling. He was reportedly ambushed and pelted with stones while returning after completing formalities as a booth agent, sustaining serious head injuries.
The repeated clashes between LDF and UDF workers, combined with attacks on political opponents and heavy-handed responses on the ground, have raised larger concerns about the state of democracy in Kerala.
