Voting beging today across Assam for the 126-member Legislative Assembly, with nearly 2.5 crore voters set to decide the fate of 722 candidates. Polling will take place from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm across 31,940 polling stations spread over 35 districts, marking one of the largest democratic exercises in the Northeast.

Heavy security deployment has been put in place to ensure peaceful voting. More than 1.5 lakh personnel, including central forces, are stationed across sensitive and remote areas. Election authorities have made special logistical arrangements in difficult terrains such as Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, where polling teams have travelled long distances, including by boats, to reach booths.

The Election Commission of India has enabled live webcasting at all polling stations for real-time monitoring. Basic facilities like drinking water, toilets, waiting areas, and wheelchair access have been arranged to ensure voter convenience. Special provisions have also been made for senior citizens above 85 years and persons with disabilities, many of whom have already opted for home voting.

What is at stake

This election is being seen as a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA and the opposition alliance led by Congress. The ruling alliance is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the opposition is hoping to capitalise on anti-incumbency and local issues.

Key leaders in the fray include Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, and Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi.

A wide range of parties are in the contest, including BJP, Congress, AIUDF, AGP, BPF, Raijor Dal, AJP, Left parties, and several regional outfits, along with over 250 independent candidates, making it a multi-cornered battle in many seats.

The electorate reflects a diverse demographic mix. There are over 6.4 lakh first-time voters, while more than 2.5 lakh voters are above the age of 80, including over 2,400 centenarians. Around 2 lakh persons with disabilities are also registered to vote.

In a notable push for inclusivity and representation, 4,021 polling stations are being managed entirely by women staff. Additionally, dedicated booths have been set up specifically for persons with disabilities.

Key Constituencies to watch

Several constituencies are under close watch due to high-profile contests and tight races. These include Jalukbari, where CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking another term, and Jorhat, where Gaurav Gogoi is making his Assembly debut.

Other constituencies like Nazira, Tamulpur, Binnakandi, Sibsagar, Khowang, Bokakhat, and Kaliabor are also witnessing intense multi-cornered contests that could play a crucial role in determining the final outcome.

Counting of votes will take place on May 4 starting at 8:00 am. Official results will be declared by the Election Commission of India and will also be available online through its official platforms.

With high voter turnout expected and security arrangements in place, today’s polling is set to be decisive for Assam. The mandate will not only determine the next government but also signal the political direction of the state in the coming years.
