Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police have arrested AIMIM leaders accused in connection with a violent incident that occurred during a GHMC anti-encroachment drive at Murgi Chowk under Hussainialam Police Station limits.

The incident, which took place on April 4, involved obstruction of polticians linked to AIMIM party and an alleged physical assault on duty police constable deployed to protect civic officials.

According to police, on April 4, 2026, at around 10:15 AM, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, assisted by police personnel from the Charminar Division, were carrying out an official drive to remove illegal encroachments from Lad Bazar to Puranapool.

At Murgi Chowk, the accused identified as Sahil Akber, along with Ghouse (former corporator, AIMIM) and Rahmath Baig (MLC, AIMIM), allegedly formed an unlawful assembly along with several associates.

Police stated that the group obstructed officials from discharging their duties and engaged in aggressive and intimidating behaviour.

During the altercation, Sahil Akber allegedly used criminal force against Police Constable Dheeraj Tiwari by grabbing and pushing him. The accused also allegedly used abusive language against the public servants present at the scene.

On the same day, BJP Telangana leader Tulla Veerender Goud criticised the law and order situation in the state, alleging that “lawlessness is on full display in Congress-ruled Telangana.” He accused AIMIM MLC Mirza Rehmat Baig Qadri and others of behaving like “street rowdies,” claiming they openly defied officials and police without fear of legal consequences, while also alleging that the Congress government remained silent due to vote-bank politics. He further claimed that BJP karyakartas face immediate arrests even during peaceful protests on public issues.

Congress stays silent. Why? To thrive on vote-bank politics.

V.C. Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, cautioned the public against resorting to violence against officials performing their duties, warning that strict legal action will be taken against those found obstructing or assaulting government personnel.

Based on a complaint filed by the constable, a case was registered at Hussainialam Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to obstructing public servants and voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty.

Latre police apprehended Sahil Akber on April 5 near Murgi Chowk. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to his involvement in the incident. He was subsequently produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate at Nampally and remanded to judicial custody.
In a related incident last month, AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig have interfered with a late-night police vehicle checking drive near the Ambedkar Statue at Tank Bund on March 9.

According to reports, Hyderabad police had seized several motorcycles during checks conducted around 2 AM for lack of valid documents. Rahmath Baig, along with AIMIM corporator Zafar Khan, reached the spot and intervened, facilitating the release of some seized bikes, particularly those belonging to Muslim youth. The incident drew criticism, with allegations that political influence was used to override due process and questions raised over selective enforcement of traffic rules.

This is not the first time that AIMIM leaders interfered in civic and law and order matters, particularly in the Muslim-majority Old City area, where instances of crime and intimidation have become frequent.

While police occasionally take cognisance of such incidents, the action often appears limited to warnings, with repeated allegations suggesting that such behaviour continues without deterrence, raising concerns over disregard for the law of the land and the authority of the elected government.

It is the standard practice of AIMIM leaders to intimidate public servants on the streets to show an aggressive stand in the interest of Muslims, and to go to the extent of projecting that their leaders will go to any extent to protect Muslims—this is the indication they want to give to their party and its supporters in the Old City. With this kind of conviction, innocent Muslims indulge in breaking law and order, violating traffic rules, intimidating others, engaging in moral policing on the streets, performing stunts on bikes, and carrying out real estate encroachments.
