Punjab Police has arrested five individuals in connection with the grenade attack outside the BJP office in Chandigarh on April 1.
Officials said the investigation points to the involvement of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, indicating cross-border backing and coordination.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police and Chandigarh Police, leading to the dismantling of a larger terror module.
Five arrested, two key accused still absconding
The arrested accused have been identified as Balvinder Lal alias Shami, Jasveer Singh alias Jassi, Charanjit Singh alias Channi, Rubal Chauhan and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma.
Police confirmed that two main assailants who allegedly executed the attack have been identified but are still absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend them.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that the investigation has uncovered links to foreign handlers operating from Portugal and Germany.
According to officials, the module functioned through a multi-layered network, using intermediaries and sub-units to execute and conceal the conspiracy.
IED attack triggered panic, no casualties
The April 1 incident occurred when two men on a two-wheeler allegedly hurled an improvised explosive device (IED) outside the BJP office in Sector 37 and fled the scene.
While no injuries were reported, the blast caused damage to several vehicles and triggered panic in the area. Forensic teams later examined the site, and CCTV footage played a crucial role in identifying suspects.
During the operation, police also recovered one grenade and ammunition, further strengthening the case.
Khalistani link, probe continues
Shortly after the blast, Khalistani extremist Sukhjinder Singh Babbar claimed responsibility for the attack.
Officials said the swift crackdown helped thwart a larger attempt to disturb peace in Punjab. Investigations are ongoing to identify and dismantle the remaining network involved in the conspiracy.
