LUCKNOW: While highlighting the scale of public employment generation, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has stated that the government in Uttar Pradesh has provided more than nine lakh (900,000) government jobs over the past nine years. This is the highest number of government jobs offered by any state in Bharat during a comparable period. This positions Uttar Pradesh as a leading example in large-scale public sector recruitment. The announcement was made during a public event in Lucknow, where appointment letters were distributed to newly selected candidates, including over 1,200 nursing officers. The occasion was not only a ceremonial induction of recruits into government service but also a platform to highlight the administration’s broader employment strategy and governance model.
Over the past nine years, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken an aggressive recruitment drive across multiple departments, including health, education, police, administration, and technical services. Chief Minister Yogi emphasised that the recruitment process has been carried out with a focus on transparency and fairness, and addresses concerns that had previously plagued public hiring systems in many states.
The scale of recruitment shows a shift toward strengthening institutional capacity in a state that is India’s most populous. By filling vacancies and expanding workforce capacity, the UP government aims to improve service delivery across sectors such as healthcare, law enforcement, and education.
Officials noted that recruitment examinations and selection processes have increasingly been digitised and monitored by independent agencies to ensure credibility. This has reportedly reduced instances of irregularities, paper leaks, and favouritism – issues that historically affected public trust in the government hiring process.
A major portion of recent recruitment has been directed toward the healthcare sector. The appointment of nursing officers is part of a broader effort to improve public health infrastructure, especially in the wake of challenges exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chief Minister pointed out that Uttar Pradesh was once criticised for weak healthcare services, but consistent investments in infrastructure and manpower have begun to change that perception. The reopening and expansion of training centres such as ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) and GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) institutes have contributed to building a skilled workforce. Additionally, the state has worked to upgrade medical colleges and district hospitals, ensuring that newly recruited staff are deployed effectively. The integration of trained professionals into the system is expected to enhance patient care, reduce workload on existing staff, and improve overall health indicators.

A key highlight of the government’s recruitment drive has been its emphasis on transparent and inclusive hiring practices. According to official statements, the selection process strictly adheres to reservation policies for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, economically weaker sections, women, and persons with disabilities. The Chief Minister reiterated that recruitment has been conducted without discrimination, ensuring equal opportunities for candidates from all sections of society.
Furthermore, the government has emphasised merit-based selection, supported by technology-driven examination systems. This has helped restore confidence among aspirants, many of whom view government jobs as a stable and prestigious career path.
The creation of over nine lakh government jobs has significant economic implications. Public sector employment not only provides financial stability to individuals but also stimulates local economies through increased spending and consumption. In a state like Uttar Pradesh, where a large share of the population is young, job creation is a critical policy priority. Government jobs, in particular, are highly sought after due to job security, social status, and benefits such as pensions and healthcare.
Beyond domestic employment, the Uttar Pradesh government has also highlighted the potential of skilled professionals, particularly in healthcare, to access global opportunities. Chief Minister Yogi noted that there is growing international demand for trained nursing professionals, and initiatives are being introduced to equip candidates with the language and technical skills required for overseas placements.
By aligning training programs with global standards, UP is planning to create a workforce that can compete internationally while also meeting domestic needs. Institutions like King George’s Medical University (KGMU) have achieved notable positions in national assessments, adding to the state’s credibility in delivering quality services. The government views these milestones as indicators of long-term transformation rather than isolated successes.
