Hyderabad, March 24, 2026: The BJP Telangana has submitted a formal complaint to Shiv Pratap Shukla, the Governor of Telangana, seeking suspension of AIMIM MLAs from the Assembly for allegedly showing disdain towards the National Song, Vande Maataram, during the ongoing Assembly session.

In a letter addressed to the Governor, the BJP urged intervention to direct the Speaker of the Telangana Assembly to take appropriate action against the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislators. The complaint pertains to an incident on March 16, the first day of the Assembly session, when MIM MLAs walked out while Vande Maataram was being recited in the House as per Union Home Ministry directives marking 150 years of the song’s origin.

The BJP stated that the act of walking out during the recitation of Vande Maataram was “contemptuous”, amounting to a “dishonour and insult to the nation”, and reflective of a “disdainful attitude” towards national symbols.

The letter further argued that the song had historically inspired millions during India’s freedom struggle and held deep national significance.

The party requested the Governor to direct the Assembly Speaker to take “all appropriate steps, including dismemberment” of the concerned MLAs, asserting that such conduct raises questions about their commitment to national values.

The BJP added that strict action would serve as an “exemplary lesson” for those showing scant regard for national symbols and songs.

BJP Telangana leaders including State President and General Secretary Vemula Ashok, Vice President Kasam Venkateshwarlu, Treasurer Devaki Vasudeva Rao, and media representatives submitted the representation to the Governor.

Speaking to media, Ramchander Rao, said that when the Vande Mataram song, which stands as the spirit of the freedom struggle, was being sung, the MIM MLAs walking out amounts to insulting the country, the national song, and the Constitution. He mocked that the Majlis leaders do not know to say “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, do not know to say “Jai Hind”, but say “Jai Palestine”.

He further said that the walkout during the recitation of Vande Maataram was not merely a violation of Assembly rules but a grave insult to the nation. He alleged that the conduct of the MIM members, who hold constitutional positions yet show a lack of respect towards national symbols, reflects a narrow mindset. The BJP demanded immediate action against the MLAs concerned, including, if necessary, cancellation of their Assembly membership.

The party emphasised that no political party or religion is above the nation’s honour and asserted that strict action against those responsible is the only way to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Observers note that, other than the BJP, neither the Congress, BRS nor the Communist parties have raised this issue on the floor of the Assembly or outside, indicating a tacit understanding when it comes to respecting the national song, and suggesting that party actions are linked only to Muslim-centric considerations. It also indicates that the Congress and BRS have silent support for the MIM MLAs in this regard. So far, none of the AIMIM MLAs have clarified their position on the Vande Maataram song.
