Chikkamagaluru: A sensitive case involving two minors from different communities in Chikkamagaluru district has taken a contentious turn after certain Hindu leaders and local activists raised allegations of “love jihad,” intensifying tensions in Mudigere taluk’s Bilagola village. The incident, a relationship between two minors, has now become a matter of communal sensitivity, prompting police intervention and multiple complaints from both sides.
According to reports, the case involves a minor Hindu girl studying in the Pre-University Course (PUC) and a minor Muslim boy pursuing SSLC. The two individuals, belonging to different communities, were reportedly in contact for some time. When the relationship came to light, family members and local groups reacted strongly, leading to a series of developments that escalated the situation beyond a private matter.
Hindu leaders and activists in the region have alleged that the relationship is part of a broader pattern described by them as “love jihad,” a term they use to suggest that such relationships are allegedly used to influence or convert individuals from another community. They have demanded scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the relationship, claiming that the involvement of a minor girl raises serious concerns.
Following these allegations, tensions reportedly rose in the village. Hindu organisation members allegedly confronted the minor boy, and an altercation took place. The boy later approached the Mudigere police station and filed a complaint alleging assault by individuals associated with Hindu groups. Based on his complaint, police have registered a case against three individuals and initiated an investigation into the alleged attack.
On the other hand, the girl’s family has also approached the authorities with a complaint against the minor boy. Acting on this complaint, police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, considering that both individuals involved are minors. This has added a legal dimension to the situation, requiring careful handling by law enforcement agencies.
Hindu leaders have continued to emphasise their stance, urging authorities to probe the matter thoroughly in light of what they describe as suspicious patterns in interfaith relationships involving minors. They have called for strict action if any coercion or undue influence is found. Their statements have contributed to heightened public debate in the area, with differing opinions emerging among local residents.
Police officials have stated that the case is being examined from all angles, including the allegations of assault and the POCSO-related complaint. Statements from both families, witnesses, and individuals connected to the incident are being recorded as part of the investigation. Authorities have also deployed additional personnel in Bilagola village to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain public order.
The dual complaints have resulted in parallel legal proceedings, with investigators working to establish the facts surrounding both the alleged assault and the nature of the relationship between the minors. Officials have reiterated that the case will be handled strictly in accordance with the law, with special attention given to the provisions protecting minors.
Meanwhile, the situation in the village remains sensitive, with local leaders urging calm and restraint. Administrative officials have advised community members to avoid spreading unverified claims and to cooperate with the investigation process.
As the probe continues, the case has become a focal point of discussion in the region, reflecting the complexities that arise when personal relationships intersect with community sentiments and legal frameworks. Authorities maintain that maintaining peace and ensuring justice through proper legal channels remains their top priority while the matter is under investigation.
