The grieving mother of the RG Kar Medical College victim has announced that she may enter active politics by contesting the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Speaking to reporters, she stated that her primary objective is to ensure justice for her daughter and to bring political change in the state. She alleged that the current government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attempted to obstruct the investigation into the brutal crime.
“I am entering politics to ensure justice for my daughter and to remove this government from power,” she said.
According to reports, she is likely to be fielded from the Panihati constituency in North 24 Parganas district. Her name is expected to feature in the BJP’s upcoming third list of candidates.
The victim’s mother revealed that she had earlier received an offer from the BJP but had declined it due to emotional distress. However, she has now decided to step into politics, stating she is mentally prepared to take forward her fight.
“I had received an offer earlier, but I was not ready then. Now I have decided to accept it,” she said.
The case pertains to the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
The incident sparked massive protests across Kolkata and other parts of the country, with doctors, civil society groups, and citizens demanding swift justice and accountability.
The case soon escalated into a major political flashpoint, with the BJP accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of shielding the accused. The state government, however, denied the allegations, maintaining that due process of law was being followed.
Reacting to the development, Md Salim, state secretary of the CPI(M), said that the decision rests entirely with the victim’s family.
“At the same time, neither the BJP nor the TMC has shown real intent to uncover the truth,” he alleged, accusing the state government of destroying evidence and attempting a hurried cremation of the victim’s body—claims that have been strongly contested in the past.
Salim also drew parallels with other controversial cases, intensifying the political debate surrounding the incident.
The entry of the victim’s mother into electoral politics shows how deeply the case has resonated with public sentiment in West Bengal. What began as a criminal investigation has evolved into a larger political and social issue, raising questions about governance, women’s safety, and institutional accountability.
As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, her candidature, if finalised, could significantly influence the political discourse, particularly in regions affected by the protests and public outrage following the incident.
