Congress Leader Sreenadevi Kunjamma’s Ration Card Cancelled
Sreenadevi Kunjamma, Congress leader and Pathanamthitta District Panchayat member, has come under scrutiny over allegations of ration card forgery linked to her candidature in the December 2025 Local Self Government elections. She is accused of inserting her name into a ration card in order to establish eligibility to contest the election. Acting on complaints, the Adoor Taluk Supply Officer has initiated action in the matter. According to the complaint, Sreenadevi Kunjamma entered her name in the ration card as the daughter of the card-holder’s husband’s sister. However, it is alleged that the card-holder’s husband had no sister, and therefore no niece by that relation.
The ration card holder had reportedly passed away on September 18, 2024. Following complaints from residents of Thuvayoor, the Taluk Supply Officer ordered the removal of Sreenadevi Kunjamma’s name from the ration card. It has also been alleged that no one currently resides at the address listed in the ration card.
Srinadevi Kunjamma, who was elected to the district panchayat from Pallikal division as a CPI candidate in 2020, joined the Congress just before the local elections in 2025 and won.
Meanwhile, Sreenadevi Kunjamma has said she will approach the court over the issue. She has claimed that she has a legitimate right to the property of the card holder and maintained that the same address was used when she contested the previous district panchayat election as a CPI candidate. According to her, no objections were raised at that time. She has also alleged that the action taken by the Supply Officer was influenced by the CPI.
The controversy has raised questions about alleged irregularities and rule violations in the election process. Her claim that she had earlier contested an election using the same ration card without objection has further triggered debate over the integrity of electoral procedures and the possibility of administrative lapses.
