Prayagraj: Fillip to spiritual tourism

Spirituality is the soft power of Bharat which offers peace & tranquillity to devotees from across the country and even abroad. This was in evidence when Prayagraj recently welcomed devotees, seeking spiritual salvation, from across the world. They took a holy bath & performed rituals at the revered Kumbh Mela or Magh Mela

Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh is one of the most happening river front cities of Bharat. The meaning of the word Prayagraj is ‘King amongst five Prayas’ of Bharat known as Panch Prayag. Panch Prayag is the expression of Hindu religious ethos.

Prayagraj is at the confluence of three rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. The sangam ghat designed and constructed here is very unique, because it gives an opportunity to devotees to have a direct connection with waters of the rivers. The ghat gains special importance during Kumbh Mela when millions and millions of devotees gather here for the holy bath. It Ghat represents totally functional architecture. The design focuses on the circulation and movement of devotees with ritual performance and catering to the needs of masses.

The stone steps are broad, gently sloping and they descend gradually into the river, allowing safe access for pilgrims of all ages. The rhythm of steps is in tune with the flowing waters of rivers. The entire design is deeply symbolic and harmonious with the nature there.

Platforms are created at every level to connect as well as segregate different rituals being performed at the same time. These spaces act as transitional zones between the human realm and the sacred river. Minimal ornamentation is the exclusivity of the design which allows to retain focus on the rituals and meditation. This simplicity reflects spiritual humility and renunciation. Prayagraj is also the birthplace of Bhagwan Hanuman. Thus Hanuman Mandir on the banks of Ganga is of great significance.

The entire city underwent reformation and renovation to receive and cater to the path breaking crowd during recently held Kumbh Mela. Spiritual tourism in Bharat is blooming day by day. Spirituality is the soft power of Bharat which has the potential to offer peace and tranquillity to the entire world. Real Bharat is at these places. This potential if tapped appropriately the originality of Bharat will be unfolded through these religious places to the world. Though conscious efforts are being made to provide facilities to devotees, a holistic approach is still needed.
