Tamil Nadu SIR update: Electoral roll reduced by 74 lakh, current electorate 5.67 crore

Following the SIR process, the State’s electorate has moved from 6.41 crore to a final count of 5.67 crore, reflecting a reduction of around 74 lakh after scrutiny of entries

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu’s electorate has recorded a sharp reduction of around 74 lakh voters following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with the total number of electors falling from 6,41,14,587 at the time of roll freeze in October 2025 to 5,67,07,380 in the final roll published today, according to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer.

The revision was carried out as per the direction of the Election Commission of India with January 1, 2026 as the qualifying date, covering enumeration, scrutiny, and disposal of claims and objections across the State.

As per the press release issued by Archana Patnaik, CEO, after completion of the Enumeration Phase, the draft electoral roll published on December 19, 2025 showed 5,43,76,756 electors.

During the claims and objections period from December 19, 2025 to January 30, 2026, 27.53 lakh eligible electors were added, while 4.23 lakh ineligible persons were deleted, culminating in the publication of the Final Electoral Roll on February 23, 2026.

The final electorate comprises 2,77,38,925 male electors, 2,89,60,838 female electors, and 7,617 third gender electors. The number of electors aged 18–19 years stands at 12.51 lakh. Electors marked as Persons with Disability number 4.63 lakh, while senior citizens aged 85 and above total 3.99 lakh.

Among Assembly constituencies, Sholinganallur in Chengalpattu district has the highest number of electors at 5,36,991 (Male: 2,62,621; Female: 2,74,254; Third Gender: 116), followed by Avadi in Thiruvallur district with 4,28,772 electors (Male: 2,09,662; Female: 2,19,035; Third Gender: 75).

Harbour constituency in Chennai district has the lowest number of electors at 1,16,896 (Male: 58,221; Female: 58,620; Third Gender: 55), followed by Egmore (SC) with 1,34,879 electors (Male: 65,677; Female: 69,149; Third Gender: 53).

The final electoral roll is available on the Chief Electoral Officer’s website, and electors have been advised to verify their details.

EC officials said, applications for inclusion (Form-6), correction (Form-8), or deletion (Form-7) can be submitted online or offline. Continuous updation has commenced from February 23, 2026, and eligible citizens may apply through Electoral Registration Officers, the portal, the Voter Helpline App, or through Booth Level Officers.
