Guwahati: “MP Gaurav Gogoi changed his children’s citizenship and even their religion.” This allegation against the Congress MP has triggered a fresh wave of controversy in Assam. BJP MLA Manab Deka took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to level further charges, accusing Gogoi of actions he described as anti-India.
Representing the BJP from the Batadroba constituency, Manab Deka said Gaurav Gogoi had, in his view, abandoned the Ahom heritage, Indian citizenship, and Hindu identity associated with his father, former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, in the case of his children. Deka also shared a document described as a “Surrender Certificate,” claiming that Gogoi’s son had surrendered their Indian passports at the Passport Office in Delhi. According to Deka, the application was submitted by the Congress MP on behalf of his child.
Why did MP Gaurav Gogoi surrender his children’s citizenship?
As per the “Surrender Certificate,” the reason cited for surrendering the passports is “surrender of passport due to acquisition of citizenship of another country by the applicant’s parents.” This indicates that the passports were surrendered following the children’s acquisition of citizenship of another country.
“Had Tarun Gogoi Dangoriya been alive today, would this not have caused him deep anguish? If this is not betrayal, then what is? Is this not an insult to Tarun Gogoi, to the Ahom community, to Assam, and to the nation? History will never forgive you.” Deka wrote, invoking the legacy of the late Congress chief minister who governed Assam for 15 years (2001–2016).

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s press briefing
In a press conference on Sunday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam government. The SIT was formed to investigate the Pakistan link of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi. The CM levelled serious allegations against the Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and his wife.
The Chief Minister said the state government has sent the SIT’s findings to the Union Home Ministry for further investigation. He explained that the Assam Police cannot investigate several aspects of the case because they fall outside its jurisdiction. The Chief Minister added that the alleged links are a serious threat to national security and therefore need a more detailed probe.
He claimed that Gogoi tried to portray Pakistan in a positive light through his actions. He said this included leading a youth delegation to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi in 2015 and meeting the then High Commissioner, Abdul Basit. The Assam CM also said that Abdul Basit reportedly visited the state.
The Chief Minister also said that Elizabeth had earlier worked as an aide to former US Senator Tom Udall. He alleged that Udall has links to billionaire George Soros, whom he accused of working against nationalist governments worldwide, including the Modi government. Sarma also questioned a 10–15 day visit by Gaurav Gogoi to Pakistan in 2013 (via the Attari border), calling it suspicious given Pakistan’s lack of conventional tourism and its status as a “terror hub.”
The Chief Minister said that Gaurav Gogoi’s daughter is a British citizen because she was born in London. CM Sarma showed a surrender certificate issued by the Regional Passport Office in Delhi. He said the passport was surrendered on 12 May 2022 and called it deeply regrettable that the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi gave up his child’s Indian passport.
