In Kolkata, a Muslim waiter at a popular Park Street bar and restaurant was arrested on January 31, following a complaint by Hindu actor and YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty. Chakraborty alleged that he was served beef instead of mutton during his dinner.

The incident occurred at Olypub, a popular venue in Kolkata’s Park Street nightlife district. Sayak Chakraborty had visited the restaurant with two friends and ordered a mutton steak. The dish was served without any explanation, and the group initially assumed it was the mutton they had requested, tasting it without suspicion.

The matter came to light shortly afterwards when the staff brought an additional steak, even though only one had been ordered. When asked, the waiter stated that two steaks had been ordered, one mutton and one beef.

Sayak said he was shocked by this response, realising he had unknowingly consumed beef, which left him mentally disturbed. During the confrontation, he recorded a video questioning the waiter and seeking an explanation, which was later shared on social media.

In the video, both the waiter and the restaurant manager were seen apologising, with the manager describing the incident as a “grave” mistake. Sayak was also heard stating that, as a Brahmin, his religious sentiments had been hurt. Later that night, he filed a complaint at the Park Street Police Station. Following the complaint, Kolkata Police arrested one restaurant employee, identified as Shiekh Nasiruddin, under Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code.

On February 1, Olypub, a bar and restaurant in Kolkata’s Park Street, issued a formal apology on social media after serving beef to Actor-turned-YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty. In their Instagram post, the establishment expressed that they were “truly sorry” for the “unintentional error.”

The statement described the incident as a “very serious but unintentional error” committed by a staff member. Olypub emphasised that no harm was intended and apologised for causing offence to the customer. The restaurant also highlighted its long-standing legacy of respect for all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, or gender, reaffirming its commitment to treating both customers and staff with dignity.
