The first week of December 2025 unfolded as a deeply unsettling period for Hindu communities across India, with a sharp rise in incidents ranging from temple desecration and attacks on religious symbols to coercive religious conversions, sexual violence, and public harassment. Spread across multiple states, many of these cases involved women, minors, Dalits, and tribal Hindus, exposing serious gaps in enforcement, social protection, and deterrence. While police action was initiated in several instances through FIRs and arrests, the repetitive and geographically widespread nature of these incidents points to a larger pattern that cannot be dismissed as isolated or incidental.

At Organiser, the onus lies in documenting these developments with facts, accountability, and clarity, bringing before the nation voices that are often ignored, suppressed, or normalised into silence. As the voice of the nation, Organiser continues to chronicle ground realities that reflect growing societal tensions, challenges to religious freedom, and the lived experiences of vulnerable Hindu communities. The incidents recorded between December 1 and December 7, 2025, when viewed collectively, raise pressing questions about communal harmony, rule of law, and the urgent need for institutional vigilance. What follows is a detailed, day-wise account of these developments, rooted in verified reports and on-ground testimonies from across the country.

The case you must know

On 2 December 2025, Hindu devotees assembling at the historic Bhojshala site in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, for their regular Tuesday puja and recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa were stopped from performing their worship by officials of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The devotees had brought a newly prepared oil painting of Maa Vagdevi for the ritual, which ASI personnel confiscated and did not allow inside the complex. Hindu groups regularly conduct puja at Bhojshala every Tuesday, with the painting intended to replace an older one. The president of the Bhoj Utsav Committee stated that despite the ongoing tradition, authorities seized the artwork. He also claimed other activities at the site were permitted without ASI approval while Hindu worship faced restrictions, demanding the painting’s return and warning of public protest if the issue remained unresolved. The devotees noted that preparations for the Muslim festival of Urs, including painting and whitewashing inside the premises, were being carried out without permission, whereas Hindu activities faced repeated constraints. The situation has caused resentment among members of the Sakal Hindu Samaj and the Bhoj Utsav Samiti, who cautioned of potential large-scale agitation. The Bhojshala complex, dating to the 11th century, is a disputed site, referred to by Muslims as the Kamal Maula mosque and by Hindus as an ancient temple of Goddess Vagdevi, identified with Saraswati. Following Madhya Pradesh High Court directions, the ASI began a scientific survey on 22 March 2024, which recorded Sanskrit and Prakrit inscriptions predating Arabic inscriptions, including phrases such as “Om Sarasvityanamah” and “Om Namah Shivay.” The survey also documented idols and depictions of Hindu deities, consistent with artefacts recovered during an earlier 1987 excavation.

Vulnerable groups, including minors, Dalits, and tribal populations, were particularly affected. While authorities intervened in several cases through FIRs, arrests, and ongoing investigations, a number of perpetrators remain untraced. The widespread nature of these incidents underscores persistent challenges in ensuring religious freedom, community safety, and social harmony across multiple states.

The cumulative impact of these events has heightened anxiety among affected communities and called attention to the need for stronger law enforcement, legal safeguards, and proactive protection measures. Hindu organisations and local residents continue to demand swift and decisive action to prevent further incidents, protect vulnerable populations, and uphold communal peace. The week’s incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance, awareness, and legal recourse in maintaining societal stability.
