Outrage erupts as TMC MP Mahua Moitra continues her anti-Hindu rant, calls Indians “braindead” and Deepawali “Garbage”

TMC MP Mahua Moitra sparked outrage after endorsing a Christian extremist’s Hinduphobic rant that called Indians “braindead” and Deepawali “garbage.” Her remark aligns with a disturbing pattern of anti-Hindu comments and highlights growing global Hinduphobia targeting Hindu festivals and beliefs

The TMC MP’s tweet a chilling “I agree” came in response to a post by a Christian extremist account that viciously described Indians as “braindead,” called their countries “shitholes,” and branded Deepawali as “retarded garbage.” The hate-filled post, laced with colonial arrogance and religious contempt, read:

“Just like that, we’ve let braindead f***ing Indians turn our beautiful Western countries into total shitholes with their retarded Deepawali garbage that has zero to do with us.”

Instead of condemning this bigotry, Moitra chose to endorse it a move that has drawn outrage from across political and social spectrums. Her response not only legitimises racial hatred against Indians abroad, but also encourages the rising tide of Hinduphobia in Western societies.

The timing of Moitra’s comment could not have been worse. Over the past week, Hindus across the world have faced a coordinated barrage of online hate and abuse for celebrating Deepawali. What should have been a celebration of diversity, faith, and cultural harmony quickly degenerated into an online onslaught of racial slurs, religious hate, and supremacist rhetoric particularly from self-proclaimed Christian nationalists and far-right trolls in the West.

In the United States and the United Kingdom, social media platforms were flooded with messages mocking Hindu traditions and denigrating Indian immigrants. The venom wasn’t restricted to anonymous trolls. FBI Director Kash Patel, a practising Hindu, faced hate after posting a Deepawali greeting being accused of “promoting the festivals of foreign gods” and “demonic worship.”

Similarly, Tulsi Gabbard, a decorated US military veteran and former Congresswoman, was subjected to vile abuse for sharing Deepawali wishes. Many extremists demanded her deportation and branded Hindu deities as “false gods” and “Murtis of demons.”

In this context, Moitra’s public agreement with a racist slur against Indians is being seen not as an isolated lapse in judgment, but as a dangerous validation of global Hinduphobia. Her endorsement lends legitimacy to hate-filled narratives that portray Hindu cultural expressions as alien or inferior echoing the same mindset that fueled colonial prejudice for centuries.

BJP West Bengal posted on X, calling her remark “a betrayal of India’s dignity”. One senior political analyst remarked, “When a sitting Member of Parliament sides with foreigners calling her own people ‘braindead’ and their traditions ‘garbage,’ it’s not dissent it’s disdain for the nation itself.”

A foreign hate-monger, while criticizing the celebration of Hindu festival Diwali abroad, called Indians "brain dead", "shithole", and compared Diwali to retard and garbage.

This is far from the first time Mahua Moitra has sparked outrage with her anti-Hindu and casteist rhetoric. Earlier this year, on August 28, she was caught on video mocking the Namasudra and Matua communities both Scheduled Caste Hindu groups in a public address. Sneering at their religious identity, she had remarked in Bengali, “All year you are Trinamooli, and during elections Sanatani?” She also ridiculed Vaishnav devotees wearing the Kanthi Mala, dismissing them as people “coming to take doles.”

The remarks were condemned across the board as “anti-Hindu hate speech”, BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya to slammed her of spreading “communal venom.” He called on the affected communities to demand accountability from the TMC leadership.

Adding to her record of controversial statements, Moitra had earlier described Ma Kali as a ‘goddess of meat and liquor’, sparking national outrage and protests by Hindu organisations. Critics have accused her of consistently mocking Sanatan traditions, and using her political platform to demean Hindu beliefs while posturing as a liberal icon.

Observers point out that Moitra’s endorsement of Western Hinduphobia mirrors the growing anti-Hindu intolerance in West Bengal under TMC rule. Over the years, numerous reports have emerged of Hindu families and children being attacked during Deepawali and Kali Puja celebrations in the state. There have also been instances of temples being vandalised for conducting traditional rituals and processions.

Despite such incidents, the TMC leadership has routinely dismissed these attacks as “minor disturbances” even as Hindu communities face intimidation for practising their faith.

Moitra’s disdain for India and its majority faith has often extended to insulting the nation itself. In previous public remarks, she praised Bangladesh as a “better country” than India, a statement that drew sharp criticism given Bangladesh’s repeated persecution of Hindu minorities. She was also accused of compromising national security by accepting lavish gifts and handbags in exchange for political favours a charge she has not credibly addressed.
