US President Donald Trump admitted that he has authorized the covert operation by the Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) targeted towards the South American country of Venezuela. While addressing the media in the Oval Office, Trump acknowledged that he has initiated the covert operation in Venezuela through the American CIA.
President Trump has also deciphered two pivotal reasons for ordering the covert operation in Venezuela. He accused the South American country for infiltrating its prisoners and culprits into the United States through the illegal channels. He also quoted the other reason as to eradicate the massive drug trafficking emanating from Venezuela, which is apparently harming the US. “Number one, they have emptied their prisons into the United States of America. They came in through the border. They came in because we had an open border. And the other thing are drugs”, Trump exclaimed. Trump also added that additional measures are being taken at the sea and land borders to contain and thwart the penetration of the drug pool into India.
However, the US officials and other credible sources aware of the developments in the US cited that the ultimate aim of Trump is beyond eradicating drug mafia and illegal infiltration. The US President and the CIA aims to dethrone the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power. Infact, the Trump administration has channelized USD 50 million, to collect information and other facilities that can lead up to the arrest of President Maduro on the basis of drug trafficking charges, the sources added.
The Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) is apparently infamous across the world for its terrible covert operations around the globe, aimed at dismantling regimes to fulfil US hegemonic ambitions. They do it under the veil of protecting democracy, shielding human rights and other globally acceptable titles. The CIA is known for its large-scale and relentless covert operations across the Latin America and Caribbean especially during the cold war.
Reacting to the remarks of Donald Trump, the government of Venezuela said that ordering a covert operation in a foreign country is a clear violation of the international law. Venezuela further accused that US is seeking to topple the regime and aiming to extract the rich oil resources in the country. “Our Permanent Mission to the UN will raise this complaint with the Security Council and the Secretary-General tomorrow, demanding accountability from the United States government”, Venezuela said in a statement released by Foreign Minister Yvan Gil.
Trump crackdown on drug trafficking
Lately, President Trump has repeatedly accused Venezuela as an epicentre for trafficking the deadly fentanyl drug. The US President has also ordered the stationing of large-scale US military vessels in the Southern Caribbean in order to thwart the drug dealers away from entering the country. Recently, even the Pentagon has acknowledged that the Trump administration is engaged in “non-international armed conflict” with the drug cartels.
Venezuela fuelling its prisoners into the US
The US President has exclaimed that Venezuela is flooding the US with its notorious prisoners including the people detained in its mental health facilities. However, Trump did not specifically mention that from which side of the border these prisoners were penetrating into the US and with what agenda they are intruding into the United States. On the other hand, vague and bizarre claims made by Trump has made many Republicans and other Congressmen confused and frustrated.
San Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat leader asserted that though cracking down on the drug trafficking is good, the Trump administration has gone too far. “The Trump administration’s authorization of covert C.I.A. action, conducting lethal strikes on boats and hinting at land operations in Venezuela slides the United States closer to outright conflict with no transparency, oversight or apparent guardrails,” Shaheen added.
Many other experts and officials have also said that, beyond mere claims Trump administration is yet to produce any solid evidence to believe that Venezuela backed drug dealers and prisoners are entering the US.
