The California State Assembly has formally recognised November 8, 2026, as “Diwali Day”, urging residents across the state to participate in celebrations of the Festival of Lights. The resolution recognises and highlights Diwali’s deep cultural significance for the Indian American community while emphasising its universal theme of unity, generosity, positivity, knowledge and reflection. California resolution celebrates Deepawali’s universal message

The resolution was adopted by the California State Assembly on August 20, Thursday and was introduced by Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra. Alongside recognising the festival, the measure expressed the Assembly’s “deepest respect” for Indian Americans and the wider Indian diaspora in California and around the world.

“The Assembly recognizes this year’s Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026 and encourages Californians to take part in this joyous day of celebration”, the resolution stated.

The formal recognition comes as Deepawali continues to gain wider cultural visibility across the United States. The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains in the US and around the world, with communities observing the occasion through diverse cultural traditions.

The California resolution described Deepawali as one of the world’s oldest holidays, bringing together families, friends and communities in a celebration centred on generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection. The Assembly noted that Deepawali is observed in different ways by communities, with homes traditionally illuminated with candles, oil lanterns and clay lamps, while fireworks are also associated with celebrations.

According to the resolution, these traditions reflect the festival’s broader message of the triumph of good over evil. The resolution linked Deepawali to themes including overcoming struggles, liberation from negativity, embracing positivity and humility and maintaining kindness despite personal challenges.

“For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth and happiness; it is a time to reflect, signifying the importance of wisdom, kindness and transformation,” the resolution stated.

Spotlight on Indian American contributions

The Assembly also underscored the importance of Deepawali for the Indian American community & recognised the role of the diaspora in California’s diverse social and cultural landscape. By formally acknowledging the 2026 festival, the resolution encourages Californians beyond socio-cultural differences to participate in the festivities and understand the values associated with the occasion.

The resolution further described Deepawali as an opportunity to celebrate good health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity, while strengthening bonds among families, friends and communities.  With November 8, 2026, formally recognised as Diwali Day, the California State Assembly has invited residents across the state to join the celebrations and appreciate the festival’s message of light, hope and positivity.

For Indian Americans, the resolution represents a formal acknowledgement of a festival deeply rooted in their cultural heritage. Apart from California, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Texas have officially recognised Deepawali with state holiday and celebrations.
