Chhattisgarh: Scuffle over illegal conversion in Durg; 7 detained in Bilaspur

Raipur: A ruckus broke out in Padmanbhpur area of Durg district after local Hindu activists reached outside a private premise, staging a protest against a ‘Prarthana Sabha’ aimed allegedly at illegal conversion on September 14.

According to the details, a religious gathering was called at a private premise in Kaalibadi of Padmanabhpur on Sunday. The program met with a strong opposition from local Hindu activists who gathered near the premise at around 10 in the morning, launching a protest against the said Prarthana Sabha.

The activists alleged that the program was aimed at enticing people into changing their religion. The protest by the activists led to a scuffle with the members of the Christian community.

According to Hindu activists, one of the members associated with the organisers of the event reached the venue and misbehaved with those protesting against the event, particularly with the women activists. This led to a major confrontation between the members of two group.

Learning about the scuffle, a police team reached the spot and tried calming the situation. The police later initiated an enquiry into the matter by lodging an FIR.

7 detained in Bilaspur after brawl over conversion activities

In a related development reported from Bialspur’s Sipat area, police on Sunday detained as many as 7 individuals after a brawl over opposition of a Prarthana Sabha.

150-200 locals were called at the program organised near Navadih Chowk of Sipat which according to local Hindu activists was aimed at converting people.

Members of the Hindu outfits started a protest on the spot, demanding the organisers to call off the event. A police team too reached the spot after receiving information about the program.

As per reports, the organisers of the event and a section of people attending the program reportedly started pelting stones on the members of Hindu outfits.

The police however succeeded in controlling the situation and detained 7 people from the spot. An FIR was also registered into the matter subsequently. The case is being probed further by the authorities.

Activities aimed at illegal conversion is on rise in the state of Chhattisgarh with scores of cases surfacing lately. The state government on the other hand has indicated about introducing a stringent anti-conversion law in the upcoming session of the state assembly.
