Uttar Pradesh: Over 1.04 lakh convictions since 2023; UP government’s ‘Operation Conviction’ delivers historic justice

Since 2023, Uttar Pradesh’s Operation Conviction has secured over 1,04,718 convictions, including 70 death sentences and thousands of life terms, ensuring swift justice for heinous crimes. This zero-tolerance approach has restored peace, boosted public confidence, and fueled the state’s economic growth, marking the rise of #NayeBharatKaNayaUP

Uttar Pradesh, once notorious for lawlessness and the shadow of mafia dominance, is scripting a new chapter in governance, peace, and prosperity. Guided by the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has undertaken a massive transformation under the motto “Aparadh/Mafia Mukt Pradesh” (Crime and Mafia Free State). The slogan “Ab na Danga, na Arajakta” (neither riots nor anarchy) is no longer just a political statement, it has become a reality for residents. Festivals, political rallies, and public gatherings now take place in a largely peaceful manner. Data from the state government shows a significant decline in riot cases, communal flare-ups, and gang-related violence compared to the previous decade.

The government’s flagship drive, ‘Operation Conviction’, is at the heart of this transformation. It was designed to ensure swift and strict punishment for criminals who are involved in heinous offences, the operation has sent a strong message that the time of impunity is over. Since 2023, this initiative has resulted in the conviction of 1,04,718 accused.

अब न दंगा, न अराजकता…

Operation Conviction marks a significant shift in Uttar Pradesh’s approach to law enforcement and justice delivery, targeting the long-standing issue of delays that often allowed habitual offenders to evade serious punishment. It was founded on the principles of fast-track trials, evidence-driven policing, and an uncompromising zero-tolerance approach. The initiative guarantees immediate and decisive justice. Better coordination between the police, lawyers, and courts has helped give priority to serious crime cases. New forensic tools, more surveillance, and digital case records have also made investigations stronger and increased the conviction rates.

Under this framework, 70 convicts have been awarded the death penalty in the most brutal cases, 8,785 have been sentenced to life imprisonment, 1,583 have received 20-year terms for crimes such as organized violence and large-scale fraud, 5,303 have been jailed for 10-19 years for violent offences, 8,033 have been sentenced to 5-9 years for other serious crimes, and 80,944 have faced terms of less than five years for offences including public disorder. This assertive and systematic crackdown has generated a tangible sense of safety and order across both urban and rural regions of the state.

Before 2017, Uttar Pradesh’s image was overshadowed by frequent riots, communal tensions, and the dominance of politically protected mafias. This left law enforcement hesitant to act against powerful offenders. The unstable environment discouraged business investments and forced ordinary citizens to live under constant uncertainty. However, under UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, the state witnessed a decisive transformation.

Criminal networks were systematically dismantled through targeted operations, and properties acquired through illegal means were confiscated or demolished. Police forces were modernized with advanced equipment, improved vehicles, and enhanced training, while women’s safety was strengthened through dedicated help desks and increased patrolling. These steps have created a safer environment, where people feel secure to report crimes and pursue justice without the fear of retaliation.

A major factor behind the success of Operation Conviction is the seamless integration of modern technology into policing. AI-enabled surveillance systems in major cities now allow real-time crowd monitoring and rapid response to potential threats, while the expansion of forensic laboratories has strengthened the quality of evidence presented in court. E-prosecution portals have streamlined coordination between the police and legal departments, reducing delays in case processing. Dedicated cybercrime units are actively tackling online fraud, misinformation, and radicalization attempts. Together, these advancements have enhanced case preparation, resulting in significantly higher conviction rates.

Uttar Pradesh’s transformation sends a strong signal across India: strong governance, coupled with swift justice, can break the cycle of crime and underdevelopment. By pairing strict action against offenders with major investments in infrastructure and welfare, the state is reshaping its image at home and on the global stage.

The success of Operation Conviction is now being studied by other states as a possible model for improving law and order without compromising on human rights or due process.
