In a significant development from Rammopur village in Azamgarh’s Phulpur tehsil, a young Muslim woman named Tamanna voluntarily embraced Sanatan Dharma and married her long-time partner Chandan Maurya. The couple, who had been in a relationship for several years, first solemnised their union through a court marriage and later performed traditional Hindu rituals at a Shiva Mandir.

The incident has drawn local attention, especially due to its interfaith nature. On May 30, Tamanna and Chandan fled their homes, prompting the girl’s family to file a missing person report at the Didarganj police station. Given the sensitivity of the matter involving individuals from different religious backgrounds, the police acted swiftly and traced the couple by July 1.

Upon being recovered, the couple presented legal documents confirming their court marriage. Tamanna also declared that she had willingly renounced her previous faith and embraced Sanatan Dharma. She adopted the name Tanu Maurya and expressed her decision to live according to the values and customs of her chosen faith.

Following her conversion, Chandan and Tanu visited a historic Shiva Mandir, where they were married once again following the traditional rites of Sanatan Dharma. The rituals were performed in the presence of local witnesses, underscoring the couple’s spiritual commitment to their new journey together.

Didarganj police station in-charge Rakesh Kumar Singh confirmed the details, stating that both families, belonging to the same village, had been in conflict over the issue. To avoid further tension, police advised both sides to maintain peace and placed certain restrictions to ensure the safety and stability of the newly married couple.

The police also clarified that since both individuals are adults and the conversion was voluntary, there were no legal grounds for interference. Singh added that Tanu’s adoption of Sanatan Dharma and the couple’s mutual consent validated the marriage under both legal and religious frameworks.
