Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain early July 4 morning, marking the second leg of his ongoing five-nation tour. He was warmly received by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who was present at the airport along with her entire cabinet of thirty-eight ministers and four Members of Parliament. This historic visit marks the first bilateral Prime Ministerial-level visit from India to the Caribbean nation since 1999, and PM Modi’s first official trip to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister.

The arrival was marked by a ceremonial welcome, including a Guard of Honour, setting the tone for a visit that celebrates long-standing cultural and diplomatic ties. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, dressed in Indian attire for the occasion, personally welcomed PM Modi on the tarmac, symbolising the warmth and depth of the bilateral relationship. Members of the Indian community had also gathered at the airport, offering greetings and expressions of joy on the arrival of the Indian leader. During this visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to receive the Order of Trinidad and Tobago, the highest honour awarded by the Caribbean nation.
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Trinidad and Tobago from July 3 to 4 at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. His engagements include bilateral discussions with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar. These discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in the areas of trade, energy, technology, and cultural exchange. He will also address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, where he is expected to highlight the historical and cultural connections between the two nations.

PM Modi also took a moment to engage with the Indian diaspora gathered at the airport. His interaction with the community was marked by a shared sense of cultural pride and emotional connection. He expressed particular joy after witnessing a traditional Bhojpuri Chautal performance in Port of Spain. He noted the performance as a cultural link that binds India and Trinidad and Tobago, particularly with regions like eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Addressing the community, the Prime Minister reflected on the deep-rooted historical ties and spoke about PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s ancestral roots in Buxar, Bihar, a connection that is well recognised by the people of both nations. He remarked that she is widely seen as the daughter of Bihar, and noted that her visit to the region in the past had further strengthened this emotional bond. Highlighting Bihar’s rich cultural legacy, the Prime Minister stated that the state had guided the world across multiple fields for centuries and expressed hope that it would continue to offer new opportunities in the 21st century.

Before arriving in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Modi concluded a productive and culturally rich visit to Ghana, the first stop of his five-nation tour. In Accra, he held delegation-level talks with Ghanaian President John Mahama to assess the state of the bilateral partnership and explore new areas of collaboration. The two leaders announced the elevation of their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, with emphasis on sectors such as critical minerals, defence, maritime security, energy, and cultural exchange. Describing the discussions as fruitful, PM Modi outlined specific areas where both countries could enhance cooperation, including FinTech, healthcare, skill development, and economic ties.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian honour, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana. The award was presented by President Mahama, in recognition of PM Modi’s efforts to strengthen India-Ghana relations. Accepting the honour, the Indian Prime Minister dedicated it to the youth of both nations and to the shared cultural values and historic ties between India and Ghana. He described the recognition as a symbol of mutual trust and the bright future that lies ahead for both countries. Prime Minister Modi also addressed Ghana’s Parliament, where he described the India-Ghana relationship as boundless.
The major diplomatic upgrade with Ghana was accompanied by the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), reflecting the growing collaboration between the two countries across multiple sectors.

As part of his cultural engagements in Ghana, the Prime Minister visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to pay homage to Ghana’s founding President and a leading voice in Africa’s fight for independence. The tribute was a reflection of India’s respect for African leaders who played key roles in the continent’s journey toward self-determination.
After wrapping up his engagements in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to Argentina from July 4 to 5 for the next leg of his tour. He will then proceed to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Summit and a state visit, followed by his final stop in Namibia.
