Sohran Mandani, a controversial Islamist and pro-Pakistan Democrat, faces a major setback as the Trump administration moves to strip him of U.S. citizenship. The US government is reportedly exploring options to revoke the citizenship of Sohran Mandani, an Islamist and pro-Pakistan Democrat running for the post of New York City Mayor. President Donald Trump has raised concerns over Mandani, calling him a ultra communist who supports anti-Indian sentiments and Palestinian terrorism.

The Trump administration is attempting to revoke Mandani’s citizenship by investigating whether he entered the country as an illegal immigrant. The move is seen as part of a broader policy by the administration aimed at revoking the citizenship of foreign-born individuals. White House Secretary Carolina Lewitt is said to be involved in the initiative targeting Mandani, following a request from a Republican senator.

Mandani, 33-year-old Indian origin, born in Uganda and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. He drew public attention after openly expressing support for Palestinian militants.

During a press conference, President Trump stated that Sohran Mandani would be arrested if he obstructs ongoing efforts to deport illegal migrants from the country. In response, Mandani denied any legal wrongdoing and described the move as an attempt to intimidate and instill fear in the city.

However, It is evident that Mandani is deflecting from the citizenship controversy and diverting focus to other political issues. Aware of the implications of Trump’s praise for independent mayoral candidate Eric Adams, Mandani responded by attacking both Trump and Adams. He said that Trump’s support for Adams was not unexpected and claimed it highlighted the need to end the current mayoral leadership.

Mandani accused Republicans of dismantling the social safety net, removing millions of New Yorkers from healthcare, and enriching billionaire donors at the cost of working families. He also accused the president of using divisive and defamatory rhetoric through Adams. Mandani expressed confidence that voters would reject these tactics in the November election.

The conflict intensified after Mandani stated he would not cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in detaining illegal migrants in New York. Trump responded by saying Mandani would be arrested and monitored, claiming there was no place for communists in the country.

Sohran Mandani has secured the Democratic nomination in the race for New York City Mayor. He led the first round of the Democratic primary and extended his lead through rank-choice voting. In the second round, he defeated his main rival, former governor Andrew Cuomo, by a margin of 12 percent.

The mayoral election is scheduled for November 4. Mandani, an Indo-American legislator from Queens, is the son of noted Indian filmmaker Meera Nair and Indo-Ugandan origin Mahmood Mandani.
