Assam: Cattle heads found in Namghar in Lakhimpur; 7 Islamist arrested; 3rd such incident after Eid

Guwahati: In yet another attack on Hindu religious faith and places, Islamist put three cattle heads near a revered religious place in Lakhimpur district in Assam. Hundreds of local people came out in protest of the heinous crime which is the third such incident after the Eid celebration on June 7.

The unacceptable crime came into light after three cattle skulls were found by locals barely 30 meters from the Siring Chuk Namghar — a sacred place of worship for the Assamese Hindu community. The gruesome discovery, made earlier this week, prompted swift action from the authorities.

Prompt action by police, 7 arrested:

After a huge protest by locals, police came into action immediately.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media  and confirmed the arrest of seven individuals in connection with the case. He lauded the prompt and coordinated action of the Lakhimpur Police, who moved quickly to contain the fallout and begin investigation.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

Monsur Ali (60), Md. Rejjak Ali (29), Saha Ali (48), Diluar Hussain (25), Dildar Hussain (30), Abu Kalam Ali (33), Jahidul Islam (22)

CM Sarma wrote in his X handle, “In a swift and coordinated response, Lakhimpur Police have apprehended 7 individuals in connection with the recovery of 3 cattle skulls found approximately 30 meters from Siring Chuk Namghar, along the roadside,” the Chief Minister posted.

During a subsequent search operation at the residence of Monsur Ali, police recovered three more cattle skulls, further strengthening suspicions of illegal slaughter and planned disposal near a site considered spiritually sacred by the local community.

The Siring Chuk Namghar, located on the outskirts of North Lakhimpur, holds deep emotional and cultural significance for the local Assamese Vaishnavite population. The proximity of the suspected slaughter site to this holy place has inflamed sentiments among locals.

Local residents gathered at the Namghar premises soon after the discovery, demanding justice and stricter surveillance in the area. Community leaders also appealed for calm and urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation without delay.

Locals alleged that illegal Bangladeshi origin settlers encroached huge riverine areas near the Hindu locality. These illegal people are now indulged in many antisocial works including drug peddling, thief, robbery and other crimes. Locals further demand immediate eviction in those areas and tough actions against the criminals. Earlier similar incidents took place in Dhubri and Goalpara districts. Cow heads were recovered in Hindu religious places. Several people were arrested in both the incidents.
