On June 14, communal tension erupted in Lakhipur town, located in Assam’s Goalpara district, after a severed cow head was discovered near a Hindu Mandir. The incident has raised concerns amid two other recent cases of Mandir desecration reported in Dhubri, a Muslim-majority district in the state.

After Dhubri, now cow meat has been thrown in front of a temple in Lakhipur, Goalpara. Locals allege this is the third such incident, always around Qurbani, and say large Muslim populations live nearby.

Local authorities responded promptly, with Lakhipur police arriving at the scene, removing the cow head, and securing the area to prevent any escalation or further disturbance. An investigation into the incident is underway.

Hindu residents in the area have expressed anger and distress over what they perceive as a deliberate attempt to hurt the religious sentiments of their community. They noted that the incident, which took place on June 14, is not an isolated case. According to them, there have been earlier instances in Lakhipur’s Ward No. 10 where cow remains—considered sacred in Hinduism—were found dumped near Mandir premises and residential areas.

In response to the incident, members of the local Hindu community staged a protest, calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible. The police, who have already taken cognisance of the situation, have launched an investigation into the case. Dr. Kashyap Prakash, Director of the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, visited the site of the temple desecration and assured the public that swift action would be taken to ensure justice.

Lakhipur Police of Goalpara District has arrested the following individuals for allegedly throwing beef near a temple in a deliberate attempt to incite communal tension post Eid-ul-Zuha:
1.Bodir Ali (57), S/o Late Jabber Ali
2.Hazarat Ali (58), S/o Riaj Uddin
3.Tara Mia (36),…

On June 15, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that five individuals — Bodir Ali, Hazarat Ali, Tara Mia, Shajamal Mia, and Jahangir Alom — had been arrested in connection with the case.

In a tweet, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “A case has been registered, and strict action is being taken to ensure all such elements face the full force of the law.”

Recent Incidents of Mandir Desecration in Dhubri

Earlier, on June 13, the Chief Minister reported that a severed cow head was discovered at a Hanuman Mandir in Dhubri — a Muslim-majority district — the day after Bakri Eid.

“Hindus and Muslims came together, and a Peace Committee was formed to address the situation. However, the very next day, another cow head was found at a Hindu temple,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated.

He further informed that during the unrest, extremists engaged in stone pelting and displayed three posters bearing the name ‘Nabin Bangla’—an organisation allegedly advocating for the annexation of Dhubri district to Bangladesh.

“There is a communal group operating in Dhubri. We have issued shoot-at-sight orders to the police,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said firmly. He reiterated that the desecration of Hindu places of worship would not be tolerated in the BJP-governed state.

On June 14, the Chief Minister announced that 38 individuals had been arrested overnight in a large-scale crackdown in connection with the desecration of a Hanuman temple in the Muslim-majority district of Dhubri.
