Tamil Nadu: From minors to elderly, DMK rule marred by alarming pattern of sexual violence

These shocking incidents, including the repeated sexual assault of a minor girls and the arrest of a VCK-affiliated union leader Nanmaran (63) for sexual harassment, paint a grim picture of escalating lawlessness under DMK rule. Critics argue these events highlight the government's alarming failure to ensure public safety

Crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu have always been on the uptick, with no signs of decline, despite opposition parties demanding that the government deal with them with an iron hand.

The Organiser has earlier carried a series of articles highlighting incidents of sexual assault, kidnapping, sodomy, murder, impregnation of minor girls, etc. This latest update covers some of the recent cases reported during the months of May and June.

A security guard, 50-year-old Mathew, from a shelter home near Judge Colony, run by the Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Department, has sexually assaulted a 13-year-old fatherless girl. The girl, who hails from Tirukovilur in Villupuram district, had been staying at the home for the past four days while preparing to join 8 th standard at a school in Chithlapakkam.

On June 8, a school holiday, the guard took her to an isolated spot in the early morning and sexually assaulted her. When she raised the alarm, he severely beat her, breaking her limbs. On seeing locals approaching, he fled the scene. With the help of CCTV footage, police identified Mathew and arrested him under the POCSO Act. The victim, who suffered a leg fracture, is currently undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).

In another case, 19-year-old S. Nandakumar, a native of Kathiyavadi village in Ranipet district, was arrested on June 4 for murdering an 80-year-old woman after sexually assaulting her. A video clip of the youth dragging her from the house to the road went viral on social media.

The elderly woman was operating a brick kiln and living with her son and her daughter’s family in a house located within a mango grove. On June 3, at approximately 5:30 PM, Nandakumar, in an inebriated state, reportedly forced his way into her house when she was alone and allegedly sexually assaulted her. As she attempted to flee, she fell and sustained injuries.

Reacting to these sexual assaults, AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami stated in a post on X, “Criminals have no fear in this state. The people of Tamil Nadu are regretting their decision to elect the DMK to power.” Former Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K. Annamalai echoed these sentiments in Madurai, asserting that no one is safe in the state and that anything could happen to them at any time. He added that the people are “living under constant fear with no peaceful and sleepless nights.”

The police arrested 19-year-old Sakthivel under POCSO for sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl in Vyasarpadi on 14th May. The victim was alone at the time, her mother having been briefly away. Upon her return, she was shocked to discover her daughter’s plight and raised the alarm, at which point the accused fled the scene. Police arrested him based on her complaint.

On May 21, police opened a case against V. Sridhar (23) for repeatedly raping and impregnating a minor girl since December 2024. Coimbatore Medical College Hospital confirmed the pregnancy and alerted the police. The accused is yet to be apprehended.

On May 22, police arrested Ashok Kumar, a 35-year-old catering service owner, who allegedly took a student of 10th standard from a cricket ground to his office, where he sexually assaulted him. The accused had been financially supporting the boy’s studies. Taking advantage of this, he behaved inappropriately towards him. The boy recounted the incident to his parents, who subsequently lodged a complaint.

In another heart-wrenching incident, a 13-year-old minor girl, living with her parents near Pallavaram, was sexually assaulted over a period of time. According to police, the girl was living with her parents when a boy from the same area befriended her under the guise of delivering water cans. Exploiting her being alone at the house and after gaining her confidence by promising to marry her, he sexually assaulted her many times. Later, he introduced her to his friends who also raped her. Due to continuous sexual assault, she was mentally and physically affected and suffered stomach pain. A medical examination revealed that she was pregnant. Hospital authorities informed the police, who registered a case and arrested twelve persons, including seven minors and five adults identified as Sanjay, N. Nandakumar, S. Surya, A. Nixon, and S. Sanjay. The girl’s mother was also arrested for abetting the crime, as some of the accused told police that she knew they were sexually assaulting her daughter.

Police arrested Nanmaran (63), General Secretary of the Chennai Port and Shipyard Workers’ Union, affiliated with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), earlier in May following a complaint of sexual harassment from a local resident at the New Washermanpet Police Station. He resides in the Tondiarpet Port Housing complex, where the incident reportedly took place. According to police sources, the complaint was lodged by the mother of a college student who resides in the same housing complex.

In May 2025, A 34-year-old temporary volleyball coach, Mohammed Kalilur Rahman, a resident of the Thopputhurai area in Vedaranyam, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor school student over several months by misleading her and her parents under the guise of sports training. He had earlier accompanied students to a sports competition held at the Government Higher Secondary School in Thiruthuraipoondi, around seven months ago.

During one of his visits to the school, he approached a senior girl student who was practising volleyball, praised her skills, and assured her that she could reach state level with his guidance. Convinced by his promise, the student shared this with her parents. Hoping for their daughter’s progress in sports, they agreed to let her travel with Rahman to participate in what he claimed were volleyball tournaments in different cities. Suspecting something amiss, her parents stopped sending their daughter for coaching. Frustrated by their refusal, Rahman made a complaint to Childline 1098, alleging that the parents were preventing a talented student from participating in competitions. Following this, officials from the district child welfare department initiated an inquiry. It was found Rahman is already married to two women who currently live separately. Investigators now believe he intended to marry the student as a third wife, exploiting her trust by posing as a mentor and coach.

Police arrested four men on charges of raping two adolescent minor girls, aged 14 and 13 years – both cousins – who went missing from their home in Chennai on April 30. On 4th May, one of the girls returned home and recounted the incident. They had left home saying they were going to buy groceries from a shop nearby, but they had not returned. Based on the complaint, police arrested R. Lokesh (25) and his A.C. mechanic friend Sadhasivam (27) from Arakonam, along with two IT employees, Syed (25) and Ashwin (25). All four were booked under POCSO. The girls told police that after leaving their homes, they had roamed aimlessly in Chennai and spent nights at Madhavaram, Kilambakkam, and Koyambedu bus terminals. They slept on benches among strangers who exploited the vulnerable girls.

D John Jebaraj, a church pastor famous for Christian concerts, who had gone untraceable after police booked him under the POCSO Act, was arrested in Munnar, Kerala, by a special police team and brought to Coimbatore in the early hours of April 12. He served as the pastor of Kings Generation Church on Cross Cut Road in Coimbatore and is accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls on May 21, 2024. He and Edmin Routh jointly used to conduct Church prayer meetings. John was known for singing prayer-based film songs, dancing, and using abusive lyrics. Due to differences of opinion, he parted company and started working alone. Recently, some pictures went viral showing him kissing minors and in compromising positions. There had already been sexual harassment cases filed by 14 and 17-year-old minor girls.

Following a complaint by one of the girl’s family members after eleven months, the police booked the pastor under two sections of the POCSO Act. Fearing arrest, the controversial pastor went into hiding and sought anticipatory bail from Madras High Court a day after the police issued a lookout notice for him. The Madras High Court has granted conditional bail to Pastor John Jebaraj. Justice L. Victoria Gowri ordered notice to the police on May 8 and granted him bail on May 14.

On May 8, the police Constable Haridoss, who was attached to the Avadi Crime Wing, was arrested and suspended for allegedly harassing a woman who had approached him for help in recovering her stolen two-wheeler. He took the woman to a resort. She was rescued by her brother, who had accompanied her. The constable demanded Rs 15,000 to retrieve the stolen vehicle. The woman stated she could not afford to pay. He then started calling her and saying he was interested in her.
