There is no end to sexual offences in Tamil Nadu. It is the women, children, and school and college girl students, who, at the hands of their pedagogues, have become a worrying concern for all. The Tamil Nadu government has not taken this seriously, and no steps seem to have been taken to avert such incidents. AIADMK claims there were 127 sexual assaults in September alone. The Tamil Nadu government stands fourth in India in child rape cases.
Organiser has been consistently publishing reports on incidents of sexual assault. This article is a continuation of the “Sexual Shocker” series. Let us look at some of the major cases reported during the month of September 25 alone.
In a deeply shocking incident, a 16-year-old boy from Gaulpalayam village in Perambalur district was detained for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl in the same area. The boy lured the girl to his home under the pretext of playing games but then sexually assaulted her. Following a complaint from the victim’s mother, the police registered a case, arrested the boy, and placed him in a juvenile correctional home.
In another disturbing case, Jabestian, a resident of Ponnakudi village in Tirunelveli district, who works in Mumbai, had returned home on leave. He lured a neighbour’s 2-year-old girl to his house and sexually assaulted her. Following a complaint, he was charged under the POCSO Act and remanded in judicial custody.
Last month, on September 25, police arrested nine individuals for trafficking and sexually assaulting a minor girl in Tiruvarur over the past two months. The victim’s ordeal came to light two months ago when a girl gave birth to a child at Mannargudi Government Hospital. It is reported that the girl lost her mother when she was 13 years old and was cared for by her alcoholic father, who abandoned her. She also dropped out of school due to poverty. This made it easier for people to sexually assault her and force her into prostitution, ultimately leading to her pregnancy.
Like a fence devouring crops, a teacher who should have protected his students became a predator. Police arrested Sivakumar, a teacher at Thiru. Vi. Ka government-aided school in Marudhur Town Panchayat, near Kulithalai, on September 26 after XI grade student contacted a child helpline alleging sexual harassment. Following a district child welfare investigation, which confirmed that the teacher had been misbehaving with students through inappropriate touching, police registered a case and arrested him under the POCSO Act.
In another incident, two policemen took a young woman and sexually assaulted her in the presence of her mother. In a first of its kind, on October 2, the DGP, invoking Article 33(3) (that empowers dismissal without holding a departmental inquiry), sacked the accused two serving constables who were earlier suspended after the crime came to light. Constables Suresh Raj and Sundar, attached to the Tiruvannamalai East Police Station, while on patrol duty, stopped a van at a junction in Endal village for document verification. The van was carrying fruits from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh on the night of September 30 to Tiruvannamalai. The policemen took the girl and her mother to a secluded place and raped her in turns, then dropped them near a bypass road. On seeing their plight, the public reported it to the police, who immediately arrested them for gang rape and produced them before a court. Doctors who treated the victim confirmed rape.

Former TN BJP chief Annamalai said in DMK’s rule, women are afraid of coming out of home. The government is more keen on protecting perpetrators and not the women. It should feel shame for the incident. Now cops themselves turn sexual assaulters where women have no safety.
Mahakavi Bharatiyar Nagar All Women Police arrested a 26-year-old Manikandan from Vysarpadi for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl under POCSO on September 2. The victim, a XII class student, is living with her grandparents’ house; on September 26, when the girl returned from school and left home saying going out with friends. When she returned she fainted. On checking her, doctors found as she had consumed liquor. On information, police registered a case and found Manikandan, who had developed a friendship with her, took the girl to his home and after giving her liquor sexually assaulted her.
Kirana (provision) shop owner Illango (48) in Vyasarpadi misbehaved with a 9-year-old girl who went to buy juice. On her return she reported his sexual skirmishes to her uncle. Police arrested him under POCSO Act.
Two professors of Bharathidasan University face sexual harassment charges as the ICC report placed before the Syndicate meeting on September 22 sought either termination of services or compulsory retirement. One of the professors appeared before NCSC claiming the charges are false. One of them was working in remote sensing department and other from economics who was demoted to commerce dept. earlier this year.
Warden of NGO in Melapalayam in Tirunelveli district for government-aided students were booked under POCSO Act. There are 15 students in the home. Warden Abubucker (46) had misbehaved with a 14-year-old girl student and threatened her not to reveal the same. She brought this to the attention woman warden Wahidha who did not take action. Following this, along with her parents she made a complaint with police who arrested the duo on September 21.
In another incident, two policemen Gauthaman (35) Prabhakaran (35) from Karur Pasupathipalayam police station on September 19 going on their bike. On their way, they found a youth and young woman were chatting at midnight. They attacked the youth and sexually harassed the woman. While Prabhakaran has been placed under suspension while hunt is on for Gauthaman.
In another incident, police arrested school manager among five people for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl. A children’s home a school up to 5th standard run by an NGO near Hosur in Krishnagiri district hit the headlines for wrong reasons. It is home for orphaned or destitute children. There are 33 children in the home. A 9-year-old girl studying in 4th standard complained of excess bleeding and pain on September 12. They informed her mother who took her to a hospital where doctors found she sexually assaulted multiple times. Police found director of home Sam Ganesh (63) raped the girl. Also arrested his wife Josephine (61) teacher Indira (36) for hiding the crime and Selvaraj (63) Nadhamurali (37) who held kangaroo court to settle without police case. It is learnt that the assault began within 10 days of admission in January this year. She was threatened not to tell anyone. Child welfare committee’s inquiry found the allegations were true. The home which was started in 1991 and pre-KG to class V was started in 2009. It has 19 boys and 14 girls. All have now been shifted to a children’s home in Bargur.
Police arrested on September 23 two men Dinesh (25) of Murugamangalam and another Dinesh (22) of Karanai for raping two minor girls. They took the girls to a building in Kayar and raped them. One of the girls became pregnant. They told their grandmother about the same. Police arrested the duo under POCSO Act.
During the month of September, AIADMK says there were 122 murders. This shows the worsening law and order in Stalin’s government rule.
As per Polimer News Channel, in the past six months, police arrested pastors Sundararajan, Kuzhanthainatharn (both from Trichy), Verghese, Regimon and John Josh (Kanyakumari), Devairakkam (Kanchipuram), Jesudoss (Chennai), Victor Thiruvallur, Milan Singh (Tirunelveli) and John Jebaraj (Coimbatore) for various sexual assault cases.

AIADMK in a statement claimed “there were 127 sexual related crimes in Tamil Nadu. Not only women and children were the victims showing the state is not safe for them. During the four and half years of DMK rule, there is no safety for working women, home alone female senior citizens and all others. The very mention of Anna University, rape of girl by DMK functionary Gnanasekaran haunting our minds. During 2012 crimes against women stood 4,465 which under DMK regime rose to 6,975. In Tamil Nadu family harassment cases went up 21.2 percent”.
