Tamil Nadu: DMK government mute on surge in child sexual abuse cases

Children are now being targeted. It is a disgrace that the Stalin government prioritises political debate on the three-language issue over addressing the deteriorating law and order situation.

Over the past week, there has been a surge in sexual assaults and harassment, predominantly against young girls. Perpetrators include unknown individuals, school teachers, and peers, indicating a concerning trend of increasing insecurity for women and girls within the state. On 24th February alone, three separate incidents were reported.

A social media user stated, “Within 24 hours, minors were raped in Kanuaykuari, women in Salem and Thirupatthur, and Mayiladuthurai. Children are now being targeted. It is a disgrace that the Stalin government prioritises political debate on the three-language issue over addressing the deteriorating law and order situation.”

In the first incident, near Mayiladuthurai, a three-and-a-half-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her 16-year-old relative. When she raised an alarm, the boy struck her with a stone to silence her, causing a severe eye injury and heavy bleeding. Doctors have confirmed she has lost vision in one eye.

In Karur, a 15-year-old girl was stabbed in the throat by a 17-year-old boy on February 23, following a heated argument. The seriously injured girl was admitted to hospital, where her condition is stable. Reports indicate the boy contacted her via social media and arranged to meet her. Upon meeting, he stabbed her throat following an argument. The victim’s parents allege she was gang-raped and then subjected to an attempted murder to conceal the perpetrators’ identities.

Police have stated there was no sexual assault and cautioned the media against disseminating misinformation. A BJP functionary, Amar Prasad Reddy, posted on X, “Another gang rape in Karur, Tamil Nadu. A group of 12th-grade students brutally raped a 10th-grade schoolgirl. The law and order situation in TN has completely collapsed under the DMK government. Where is Chief Minister @mkstalin’s so-called Dravidian model now?”

In another distressing incident, a 20-year-old woman was gang-raped by two youths after they threatened to kill her six-month-old baby with a knife. The woman, who wished to marry a man of her choice, was instead married to another and resides in Kovilpatti, Virudhunagar district. Her husband is currently working in Kerala. On February 19, while she was feeding her baby, two men forced entry into her home and gang-raped her. They subsequently returned at midnight and raped her again.

Upon observing her distress, neighbours inquired about her well-being. She tearfully recounted the incidents, which were then relayed to her husband. Following her complaint, police initiated a search for Mariappan (28) and Mari Selvam (27). The two were apprehended. Mari Selvam was shot in the leg after attempting to attack police officers.

In the third incident, Salem police arrested a drawing master for sexually harassing students. He was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In Kanyakumari, Reverend John Rose, a church pastor, allegedly threatened and sexually assaulted a girl who visited the prayer hall several months ago. Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and arrested him in Coimbatore, where he was hiding with his family. After the victim, the daughter of a daily wage labourer, complained of severe abdominal pain, doctors confirmed she had been raped, prompting her family to file a formal police complaint.

It is alleged that John Rose took her to Kollam for an abortion. She subsequently gave birth to a child. Police arrested John Rose, his wife Jilin Prabha, and son Pradeep.

All-women police arrested a 25-year-old man on charges of marrying a 16-year-old minor, sexually assaulting her, and impregnating her in a village near Panruti, Cuddalore district. When the girl visited a primary health centre, doctors discovered she was four months pregnant. They informed the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and the police. During questioning, the girl stated she was married to the man on September 7, 2023 against her will. Police arrested the youth and charged him under the POCSO Act. Her parents and four relatives were also arrested for facilitating the child marriage.

Police are searching for Raman, a science teacher at a government-aided school in Manickanadar Colony, near Thiruchendur, for sexually harassing an 8th-grade girl. He has absconded.

In Villupuram, a male student at a Government Adi Dravidar school reported sexual assault by classmates. It is alleged that these acts are emboldened by the recent LGBTQ+ ‘rainbow procession’ flagged off by a member of the DMK’s first family.

A viral video depicts the mother of a rape survivor attempting suicide before the District Collector’s office in Virudhunagar, demanding the perpetrator’s arrest. Police intervened to prevent her action.

These events reveal the deteriorating law and order situation prevailing in the state, and the DMK government’s attempt to subvert these details by turning them into a public debating point, out of fear that they may lose the already waning public trust.
