India has successfully tested a cutting-edge indigenous combat drone, marking a major stride in defence innovation. The attack drone ‘Rudrastra’, developed by private defence firm Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited under Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, was put through its paces at Pokhran. In the trial conducted on the 11th, Rudrastra not only met but exceeded the stringent performance benchmarks set by the Indian Army.

Unmatched Agility and Strike Capabilities

Capable of vertical take-off and landing like helicopters, Rudrastra does not require a dedicated runway, unlike conventional drones. This feature allows it to operate effectively from rugged and inaccessible terrains. The drone has an operational range of 170 km. During the Pokhran test, Rudrastra accurately struck a target 50 km away and returned safely, convincing the Army of its effectiveness. Rudrastra is designed for battlefield use, particularly to halt the advance of enemy troops. It can currently stay airborne for around one and a half hours while seeking and engaging its target.

India's Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd (SDAL) has successfully completed trials of its Rudrastra Hybrid VTOL UAV at Pokharan Firing Range on 11 June 2025. The name ‘Rudrastra’ is derived from ancient Hindu Puranas, where it refers to a divine weapon associated with Lord Shiva. Described in the Puranas as a weapon of mass destruction, the name symbolises the drone’s devastating capabilities. Rudrastra is equipped with anti-personnel warheads that are engineered for precision targeting. These warheads are designed to explode in the air just above their target, rather than striking it directly. Upon detonation, high-velocity fragments are dispersed, causing severe damage to enemy personnel and equipment in the vicinity.

The Drone Will Launch Strikes While Streaming Live to Command

The drone will launch its munitions from altitudes ranging between 2,000 and 3,500 metres above ground level and will simultaneously transmit live footage of the attack to the command centre. Rudrastra is capable of autonomous surveillance, intelligence gathering, and precision strikes.

India has recently intensified investments in drone warfare, with increasing participation from private companies . Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited had previously developed the ‘Nagastra’ kamikaze drones used by the Indian Army during Operation Sindoor.

Following Rudrastra’s successful trial at Pokhran, the next step will be its induction into active military service. After Operation Sindoor, India’s focus has shifted towards integrating advanced, high-tech weapon systems into its armed forces. The Ministry of Defence has also encouraged private firms to develop indigenous technologies and contribute innovations under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
