An important milestone in India’s military history was reached when 17 female cadets became the first female graduates of the prestigious tri-service National Defence Academy (NDA) on May 29. They celebrated their ceremonial “Antim Pag” (Final Step), a proud transition into commissioned military leadership, by marching with 322 male cadets at the Khetrpal Parade Ground.
As part of the 148th NDA course, this momentous event marked the formal end of training for the academy’s first coed class and set a new benchmark for gender integration in India’s military. The passing out parade was presided over by General V K Singh (Retd.), the current Governor of Mizoram and a former Chief of Army Staff, who commended the pioneering cadets for their tenacity and resilience. General Singh said during the procession. These young women represent the power of “Nari Shakti.” Their presence here is more than just a representation of women’s advancement; it is a major step toward women-led advancement in our military services. Academy Cadet Captain Udayveer Negi led the procession as the NDA celebrated the culmination of three years of intense academic and military training. In total, 339 cadets graduated: 84 Computer Science, 85 From the Arts stream, 59 From the Science stream Each received a degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Additionally, 111 students currently enrolled in the BTech program from the Navy and Air Force wings received certificates of completion for their three-year courses. These cadets will receive their final degrees following their final year at the Indian Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy.
The inclusion of women at the NDA was made possible by a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2021 that mandated equal opportunities for women to attend the academy. This decision was hailed as a paradigm shift in the military’s gender dynamics. Aside from being a symbolic victory for gender equality, the successful graduation of the first female cohort also shows how the Indian military is evolving in terms of inclusivity, operational diversity, and progressive leadership. As the sun rose over the parade ground, new history was made, and the sounds of coordinated footsteps echoed throughout the campus. The male and female cadets advance to their next training phase as they get ready to take the oath of office as commissioned officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force at their different military academies. With this bold move, the National Defence Academy has truly entered a new era where excellence is the only criterion and gender is no longer a barrier.
