“Brutally beaten, violently raped”: Hindu woman accuses The Wire journalist Omar Rashid of being a “Serial abuser”

A woman’s viral Instagram post has accused The Wire journalist Omar Rashid of rape, torture, and forcing her to consume beef, igniting outrage and reviving debates over "Love Jihad." The allegations, which The Wire has acknowledged and is investigating, expose a chilling tale of abuse allegedly perpetrated by a prominent figure in Delhi’s so-called liberal media circles

A shocking revelation that has sent ripples through India’s media and social circles, a woman has accused Omar Rashid, a journalist associated with the propaganda news outlet The Wire, of heinous acts of rape, sexual abuse, torture, and extreme physical and mental harassment. The allegations, detailed in a viral Instagram post by an unnamed woman, also claim that Rashid forced her to consume beef despite her objections, highlighting her Hindu identity in a humiliating manner. The accusations have sparked renewed debate about the concept of “Love Jihad,” a phenomenon The Wire and similar outlets have long dismissed as a myth.

Allegations of Abuse and Exploitation

The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, shared a harrowing account of her ordeal in a detailed Instagram post that has since garnered widespread attention.

She alleges that Rashid, leveraging his status as a seasoned journalist within Delhi’s media circles, manipulated her into a relationship.

According to her post, Rashid, described as significantly older than her, used his charm and progressive persona to lure her. “Omar had ‘charmed’ her through days of chatting about progressive politics, followed by suggestions of ‘walks’ in the Lodhi garden,” the post reads, accusing him of employing similar tactics with multiple women by projecting a false image of a “charming Muslim man who is a pet lover, foodie, progressive Liberal and a guy who has lost his mother.”

The woman labels Rashid a “serial abuser and rapist,” claiming she endured repeated physical and sexual violence at his hands. She alleges that he “brutally beat, slapped, kicked, and violently raped” her multiple times, subjecting her to “extreme sexual humiliation, abuse, beatings, and violent rape that left her bleeding and bruised.” The accuser further claims that Rashid never used protection during these assaults, forcing her to seek medical treatment for abortions and sexually transmitted infections due to his relationships with multiple unknown partners.

In addition to the sexual and physical abuse, the woman alleges that Rashid destroyed her personal belongings, including family heirlooms, fully aware of her financial struggles. “He reportedly used her to extreme humiliation, making her beg at his feet while he described imaginary sexual abuse of her mother before her, and physically assaulting her,” the post states. She also recounts hiding in a bathroom to escape his violent advances, despite her explicit refusals and poor health.

Forced Consumption of Beef and Religious Humiliation

Among the most disturbing allegations is the claim that Rashid forced the woman, a Hindu, to consume beef, fully aware of her cultural and personal aversion to it. “Omar Rashid had forced her to eat beef multiple times, asserting his Kashmiri Muslim identity and highlighting her ‘non-Muslim’ status, despite she hating the beef and puking it out every time he force-fed her,” the Instagram post states. This act, the woman alleges, was part of a broader pattern of humiliation tied to her religious identity.

While the accuser explicitly stated that she does not want her ordeal to be given a “communal angle,” she emphasised that her experience reflects a broader pattern of powerful men exploiting younger women in professional settings. “The woman has also mentioned that she does not want her ordeal to be given a ‘communal angle’, but it should be seen as another one of the countless stories where women suffer abuse and exploitation by older, more powerful men they come in contact with at workplaces,” her post reads.

“Grave allegations”: The Wire Responds

The Wire, the outlet Rashid has been associated with as an independent journalist, issued a statement acknowledging the allegations and announcing an internal inquiry. “The Wire has taken serious note of the grave allegations against Omar Rashid, who has been contributing to The Wire as an independent journalist for the past couple of years. We will be conducting an enquiry as per relevant laws and procedures applicable in the matter and decide on how best to move forward to address the allegations raised on the post,” the statement read.

The outlet’s response has drawn scrutiny, given its history of dismissing claims of “Love Jihad” – a term used to describe systematic efforts by Muslim men to target non-Muslim women for conversion, exploitation, or abuse under the guise of romantic relationships. The Wire’s past rejection of such claims, often labelling them as communal propaganda, now faces a credibility challenge in light of these allegations against one of its own employees.

The “Love Jihad” Debate Reignited

The allegations against Rashid have reignited discussions about “Love Jihad,” a concept that The Wire and other media outlets like them have long denied or downplayed. The term refers to instances where Muslim men are accused of using false personas to target Hindu and non-Muslim women, subjecting them to abuse, forced conversion, or exploitation. The phenomenon is rooted in extremist interpretations of Islamic supremacy, where non-Muslim women are viewed as permissible targets for humiliation or enslavement.

“Thousands of women in India and worldwide continue to become victims of this phenomenon. From the rape gangs of the UK, the sex slavery of Yazidi women, the rape and blackmail gangs of Ajmer, to the conversion and jihadi recruitment cartel in Kerala, this ideology of enslaving the ‘kafir’ women and using them to further the cause of Islam has been alive and ongoing in today’s so-called modern world,” linking the allegations against Rashid to broader global patterns.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The woman’s Instagram post has sparked outrage across social media platforms, with many calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for Rashid. Others have criticised The Wire for its perceived hypocrisy in dismissing “Love Jihad” while now facing allegations involving one of its journalists. The woman’s explicit request to avoid communalising her ordeal has also prompted discussions about balancing individual justice with broader societal patterns of abuse.

As of now, no formal charges have been reported, and the investigation announced by The Wire is ongoing. Neither Omar Rashid nor his representatives have issued a public response to the allegations at the time of this report.
