New Delhi: As many as three personnel of Telangana police attained veergati (martyrdom) after they were gravely injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) triggered by the Maoists in Mulgu district of Telangana along the Chhattisgarh border.

The blast occurred when the personnel of special counter-insurgency unit of Telangana police were out on a routine combing operation between the remote forested areas of Vajedu and Peruru under the jurisdiction of Vajedu police station in Mulgu district on early morning of May 8.

The blast was powerful in nature, causing fatal injuries to three personnel alongside injuring a few other who were evacuated and shifted to nearby medical facilities subsequently.

According to media reports, the extremists after the explosion started indiscriminate fire upon the forces to which the latter retaliated strongly. An intense encounter is still reported to be underway between security forces and Maoists and more details about the development are awaited.

It must be noted here, that of late the security forces have amped up operations against the Maoists in their strongholds along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana interstate borders, causing panic among the cadres of the banned group which is already on the backfoot after suffering major losses in Abujhmaad and adjoining areas in Bastar.

Earlier while sharing information about the ongoing operation against the Maoists at Karregutta hills along the Telangana border, Chhattisgarh deputy CM Vijay Sharma confirmed that the extremists have suffered major losses in the operation launched in their stronghold of Bijapur. The Deputy CM however remained tightlipped about the figures and other details about the ongoing campaign which is being carried out since April 21.

It is being assumed that the top leaders of the group have taken shelter in the forested bordering areas of Chhattisgarh-Telangana after persistent operations in North Bastar and adjoining areas compelled them to escape to down south.

Notably over 350 Maoists were killed in separate encounters carried out by the police and security forces in the state of Chhattisgarh since the formation of the incumbent government under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
