UP: Iqrar Pasha posed as Raj Thakur to lure Hindu widow now tells, “We trap Hindu women to get them converted to Islam”

A Hindu woman has accused a man of hiding his Muslim identity, marrying her under a false name, and later coercing her into converting to Islam. The woman, who has suffered multiple abortions and severe abuse, claims she was threatened with death by the man and his family if she refused to convert. Despite an earlier FIR filed in February 2025, fresh allegations have now emerged, revealing a deeper pattern of deception and religious coercion

Yet another Hindu woman has sought protection from the police, alleging that she was deceived into marriage by a man posing as a Hindu, who later turned out to be a Muslim. The man, along with his family members, is now threatening her with death if she refuses to convert to Islam. The brothers of the accused also raped her. Activists have termed the incident a case of ‘Love Jihad,’ which came to light only after they accompanied the victim woman to the police station in the Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh on May 5, 2025, and protested.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, a fresh FIR is yet to be registered. Police officials are currently citing an older case filed earlier this year, which only includes charges related to dowry harassment and omits any mention of the state’s anti-conversion law.

The victim with Hindu activists at the police station

The victim, a Hindu woman identified as Seema Agarwal (name changed; surname retained), submitted a detailed complaint to the police stating that she was trapped by a man named Iqrar Pasha, who had introduced himself as Raj Thakur.

According to Seema, Iqrar built a relationship with her under a false Hindu identity, eventually married her, and later subjected her to mental, physical, and financial abuse. Nearly two years after their marriage, she discovered that not only was he a Muslim, but he was also already married and had four children.

She claims that Iqrar and his family have been pressuring her to convert to Islam. When she refused, they allegedly tortured her and threatened to kill her and her two children if she did not comply.

What does the complaint letter say?

Organiser accessed her signed complaint dated May 5, 2025, which reads:

“My husband, Narendra, passed away in an accident a few years ago, leaving me with two sons. During this time, I met a man named Raj who expressed sympathy and proposed marriage. Thinking about my children’s future, I agreed to marry him. After marriage, Raj moved in with me and my children at a rented house. At my insistence, he eventually took me to his native village, where I discovered that he was actually from the Muslim community. His real name is Iqrar, and he already has three children from a previous marriage.”

She further added, “When I confronted him and his family, they said openly that they wanted to convert me to Islam, which is why Iqrar had faked being Hindu. His family, including Israr (son of Alwar), Raja (son of Zulfikar), and Afsana (wife of Iqrar), have continuously forced me to offer namaz, eat beef, and accept Islam. When I refused, they threatened to kill my children and forcibly convert me.”

“I was held hostage, and on the provocation of Iqrar and Afsana, Israr, Raja, and Zarrar repeatedly raped me. When I protested, they pointed a gun at my children’s heads. I was terrified and could not take legal action. I eventually managed to report the matter to Majhola police station, but they registered only mild charges. No action has been taken so far, and they continue to threaten me and my children to convert to Islam and eat beef,” she said.

An FIR registered in the matter

Importantly, this is not Seema’s first approach to the police. Back in February 2025, she had submitted a complaint to the Majhola Police Station, based on which an FIR (No. 141/2025) was registered. However, the FIR only included nominal charges and failed to address the core allegations of identity fraud and forced conversion.

Organiser accessed the contents of the FIR, which read:

Seema married Raj alias Iqrar on 28.02.2022, after knowing him for about a year. After two years, she learned that he was a Muslim who had misrepresented himself as a Hindu. She further found out he was already married with three children.

The applicant underwent three abortions and is now being threatened by her husband and his family, who demand Rs 5 lakh in dowry. They have threatened to kill her and her children if she fails to comply. On 30.01.2025, Iqrar visited her house in Buddhi Vihar and assaulted her. Along with Israr (son of Alwar), Raja (son of Zulfikar), Jarar (son of Israr), and Afsana (wife of Iqrar), he warned her against approaching the police. They offered a “settlement” — one lakh rupees and a 100-yard plot in their village Peepalsana, under Bhojpur PS, if she agreed to keep silent.”

Copy of the FIR as accessed by Organiser

Based on this complaint, police booked the accused under BNS Sections 85, 89, 115(2), 351(2), 352 and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. However, no charges were framed under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion laws, despite the clear allegations in her letter.

What Seema told Organiser?

Speaking to Organiser on May 6, Seema recalled how she met Iqrar after receiving a phone call from a wrong number. The two became friends, and he gradually earned her trust. He later proposed marriage, and they got married in a simple ceremony at home, as per Hindu rituals.

Seema said he actively participated in Hindu customs — visiting temples, attending pujas, and even fasting during Navratri and Shivratri. He would perform aarti, and she never suspected that he might not be Hindu.

Later, when he returned to his native village, Seema followed him and was shocked to discover his true identity. He claimed to be a divorcee with one child, but she found a woman in the house who was introduced as his sister but turned out to be his wife. The woman allegedly told Seema, “This is our job. We trap Hindu women to convert them to Islam.”

Seema said that after this revelation, the entire family began torturing her and pressuring her to convert. When she resisted, they even force-fed her beef and said the only acceptable path forward was conversion to Islam and nikah. She tried to reach out to authorities from Bareilly to Majhola PS, but received no help. Eventually, she contacted local Hindu activists, who helped her take the matter to higher officials.

The police, however, have not registered a fresh FIR. On social media platform X, they claim the matter is already in court, but under dowry charges only, not forced conversion.
