Guwahati: In a sweeping crackdown on inflammatory and anti-national remarks linked to the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam Police have arrested six individuals from different parts of the state, including a sitting legislator, an advocate, a journalist, and a university student.
The individuals arrested were Md. Aminul Islam, AIUDF MLA, Md. Jabir Hussain from Hailakandi, Md. A.K. Bahauddin and Md. Javed Mazumder from Silchar, Md. Mahahar Mia (alias Md. Mujihirul Islam) from Morigaon, and Md. Sahil Ali from Sivasagar.
According to police sources, the arrest stemmed from a series of social media posts made by the accused that either supported Pakistan or justified the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of at least 26 civilians and injured dozens more.
Advocate and Journalist Among Those Arrested
Md. Javed Mazumder, a practicing lawyer from Sonai in Cachar district, was arrested on Friday for publishing derogatory content on social media, which allegedly promoted the interests of Pakistan and attempted to incite communal disharmony. He was apprehended by Sonai Police from his residence in Nagdirgram.
In a separate arrest, Md. Jabir Hussain, a local journalist and correspondent of a regional daily, was taken into custody by Panchgram Police in Hailakandi. Authorities allege that Hussain posted inflammatory content on Facebook, questioning the authenticity of the Pahalgam attack and suggesting it was a diversionary tactic to shift focus from the Waqf Amendment issue pending in the Supreme Court.
‘Good Job’ Remark Sparks Arrest
Md. Mahahar Mia, who also goes by the alias Md. Mujihirul Islam, was arrested from Morigaon after allegedly glorifying the Pahalgam attack in a Facebook post, referring to the killings of innocent civilians as a “good job.” His remarks attracted widespread condemnation and led to immediate police action.
Student Arrested in Silchar, MLA Held in Nagaon
A.K. Bahauddin, a student of Assam University in Silchar, was also arrested for communal and hate-filled social media activity. He allegedly used derogatory language and attempted to justify the terror attack, inciting communal tension online.
Earlier, AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam was arrested in Nagaon on charges of sedition and other serious offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Islam had claimed that the Pahalgam attack, similar to past incidents in Kashmir, was a pre-planned conspiracy by the central government. His remarks, perceived as anti-national, were met with outrage across the political spectrum.
An FIR (No. 347/25) was filed against him under several BNS sections, including 152 (sedition), 196, 197(1), 113(3), and 352, all related to incitement, spreading false information, and disturbing public order.
Chief Minister’s Instructions
Reacting to the arrests, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a stern warning via social media platform X. “Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam. Further arrests are underway as part of our ongoing crackdown,” he stated.
The April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam has sent shockwaves across India. As the nation continues to mourn the victims, public outrage has intensified against those perceived to be justifying or trivializing the violence. In Assam, multiple civil society organisations have taken to the streets, condemning not just the attack, but also the controversial responses surfacing on social media. Authorities have reiterated that the state will maintain zero tolerance toward any attempts to spread communal disharmony or glorify acts of terrorism.
