Bastar: In a significant breakthrough for the security forces in insurgency-hit Bastar, as many as three Maoists were killed in a gun battle that occurred in the Karegutta area of Bijapur district, said police on April 24.

According to preliminary report, an encounter broke out between the security forces and the extremists along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh inter-state border on Thursday morning, leading to the neutralisation of three Maoist cadres.

Thousands of personnel belonging to separate security units were reportedly part of the ongoing mega-operation launched in the bordering area on April 21.

The operation was launched days after the security forces received credible intelligence from Maoists who recently laid down weapons before the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur.

An extensive search operation is reported to be underway near the site of the encounter and more details about the gun battle are still awaited.

Notably, 8 Maoists were killed in an encounter with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district on April 21. The encounter took place in the Lugu hills under the Lalpania area.

One of the Maoists gunned down in the encounter was later identified as Vivek alias Prayag Manjhi, a dreaded cadre of the outlawed group, carrying a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head.

“In the Bokaro encounter, Vivek, a Maoist with a reward of Rs 1 crore, was also killed during the encounter. A total of 8 bodies of Maoists have been recovered so far,” Jharkhand’s Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta said.

The security forces during the operation also recovered an AK-47, SLR and INSAS rifles. As many as eight country-made Bharmar rifles and a pistol was also seized from the spot.

It is worth mentioning here, that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced to eradicate the Maoist-insurgency from the country before March next year.
