From Triple Talaq to Waqf: Narendra Modi is championing Muslim empowerment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led transformative reforms aimed at empowering India’s Muslim community, notably through the abolition of Triple Talaq and the Waqf Bill. These initiatives reflect a broader vision of inclusivity, equality, and national progress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has marked a transformative shift in India’s approach to social justice, inclusivity, and the empowerment of marginalised communities. Under his leadership, the Indian government has made landmark decisions that have redefined the status quo. Among the most significant of these is the passage of the Waqf Bill and the abolition of Triple Talaq, which have not only brought long-awaited reforms but have also forged stronger relationships with the Muslim community, both within India and abroad.

The Waqf Bill: Ensuring fairness and balance in the Muslim community

The Waqf Bill, introduced by the Modi government, is a game-changer for India’s Muslim community. For years, there were disparities in how Waqf properties—properties held in trust for the benefit of the Muslim community—were managed. Under the previous system, only a certain segment of the Muslim population had access to the benefits of these properties, leaving many others disenfranchised.

Prime Minister Modi’s introduction of the Waqf Bill addresses this issue head-on. By making the management of Waqf properties more transparent, inclusive, and accountable, the bill ensures that the benefits are distributed more equitably across different factions of the Muslim community. This is a significant departure from the previous policy, which tended to favour a particular segment of the community, often overlooking the needs of others.

The reform is a testament to the Prime Minister’s commitment to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Bharosa—the belief that every citizen, regardless of their religion, deserves equal opportunity, access to resources, and the right to flourish. Modi’s Waqf Bill aligns with this vision, as it ensures that the benefits derived from Waqf properties reach all sections of the Muslim community, particularly those who were previously excluded.

Abolition of Triple Talaq: Empowering Muslim women

Perhaps one of the most defining moments in Modi’s tenure came with the abolition of Triple Talaq, a practice that allowed Muslim men to divorce their wives unilaterally by uttering the word “talaq” three times. For decades, this practice subjected Muslim women to grave injustice, leaving them vulnerable and often destitute.

In a bold and historic move, Prime Minister Modi ensured the criminalisation of Triple Talaq through legislation, protecting the rights of Muslim women across the country. This move was widely hailed as a step toward gender equality, safeguarding the dignity and freedom of Muslim women who had long been trapped in a system that allowed for arbitrary divorces and left them without legal recourse.

By ending Triple Talaq, Modi not only uplifted Muslim women but also sent a strong message that the government would not tolerate any practice that undermines women’s rights or well-being. This was a crucial step in making Indian society more equitable and ensuring that Muslim women, who had been denied justice for so long, were finally given the respect and protection they deserve.

Global recognition and strengthening ties with Muslim countries

The Modi government’s decisions on Triple Talaq and the Waqf Bill have not gone unnoticed internationally. In fact, these moves have earned Prime Minister Modi recognition from numerous Muslim-majority countries, who have acknowledged his efforts to modernise and reform practices that have long been considered outdated.

Several countries have conferred top awards upon Modi in recognition of his leadership and commitment to social justice. This global acknowledgment further strengthens India’s position on the world stage and highlights the Prime Minister’s ability to navigate complex issues both domestically and internationally. It is rare for a leader to garner praise from such a diverse array of nations, but Modi’s inclusive policies and progressive stance on Muslim women’s rights have resonated far beyond India’s borders.

Recognition & Top National Awards from Muslim nations has also had a profound impact on the political landscape within India. While opposition parties, such as the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP), have historically relied on vote-bank politics, often playing to communal divisions, the Modi government has reframed the narrative. Instead of using religion for electoral gain, Modi has focused on the empowerment of all communities, including Muslims, ensuring that their needs are addressed without resorting to divisive politics.

A Message to the Opposition: Moving beyond vote-bank politics

The opposition parties, particularly Congress and SP, have often been accused of wooing to Muslim voters through vote-bank politics. These parties have long relied on the notion that the Muslim community can be swayed through targeted promises, without actually addressing the root causes of the community’s concerns. However, Modi’s policies have changed the narrative entirely. He has shown that true political leadership lies in delivering results and policies that uplift the community as a whole, rather than creating divisions for the sake of electoral gains.

By focusing on the welfare of Muslim women, promoting equity within the Muslim community, and garnering international praise, Modi has set a new precedent for how India should approach social justice. The focus is no longer on appeasement or political manipulation rather it is on true empowerment, equality, and development for all.

A Vision for an Inclusive Future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure has been characterized by a commitment to the principles of inclusivity, empowerment, and national progress. His landmark decisions on the WAQF Bill and the abolition of Triple Talaq stand as symbols of his government’s dedication to ensuring justice for marginalised segments of people particularly from the Muslim community. These reforms are not just about policy changes; they represent a broader vision for a more unified and inclusive India.

Through these transformative steps, Modi has shown that leadership is about more than securing votes; it’s about securing the dignity, rights, and opportunities of every citizen. His focus on Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Bharosa is not merely a slogan—it is a guiding principle that is shaping a future where every Indian, regardless of religion, gender, or background, can thrive.

As the Prime Minister’s influence continues to grow globally, his approach is a reminder that good governance is about empowering the people and securing their future, rather than relying on divisive tactics or empty promises. Narendra Modi’s leadership is undoubtedly shaping a new, more inclusive India, one where every citizen’s rights and well-being are prioritised.
