The Chaumukhnath Mandir, located in the village of Nachane, of Madhya Pradesh, approximately 70 km from the district, dates back to the seventh century. It has been preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, Jabalpur. The Mandir features four forms of Bhagwan Shiva and an ancient Shivling, which were discovered during excavations. It is a significant spiritual centre, attracting visitors from distant places who come to seek blessings. It is believed that the Bhagwan fulfils any wish made here.

The statue of Bhagwan Shiva, dating back to the seventh century during the Gupta period, depicts four distinct forms of the Bhagwan. The circular statue showcases the first form of Bhagwan Shiva as a groom. In the second form, he appears as Ardhanarishwar. The third form shows the Bhagwan absorbed in meditation, while the fourth form portrays him drinking poison. These statues are both unique and ancient, drawing visitors from far and wide to admire them.

Dr Shivakant Bajpai, the Superintendent Engineer of the Jabalpur Archaeological Survey Department, explains, “This statue belongs to the late Gupta period and dates back to the seventh century. The murti is not only beautiful but also very ancient. The Mandir itself is carved from stones, and even the door frame features carved inscriptions, making it a rare and historical site.” He further mentioned that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is conducting excavations at the Mandir. During the excavation, an ancient Shivling has been discovered, though it remains embedded in the ground and has not been removed. Currently, no one is allowed to take photographs or videos, and barricades have been erected around the area.

The Parvati Mandir is located within the Mandir premises. As a very ancient structure, the entire courtyard has been placed under the protection of the Archaeological Survey Department. Large boundary walls have been constructed around the Mandir, and within the courtyard stands a fifth-century Mandir dedicated to Maa Parvati. This Mandir is made from flat stones, and its carvings are truly remarkable. The Mandir is beautifully crafted, with intricate designs carved into the stones. It features four pillars, and the door frame is a stunning example of stone cutting and carving, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.

Madhya Pradesh boasts several ancient Mandirs, including the ‘Sanchi 17’ from the Gupta period, dating back to the 5th century CE. This Mandir is considered the oldest surviving complete temple in India till date.
