UP: Communal tensions in Bareilly as Islamists threaten Hindus against Holi celebrations

This is not the first time such tensions have erupted in Bareilly. In 2022, during the sacred Hindu month of Saavan, kanwariyas in the Jogi Navada region were targeted with gunfire and stone-pelting while performing religious processions

Communal tensions flared in Bareilly’s Hajiapur locality under the Baradari police station area after a group of Muslim youths attacked members of the Hindu community, threatening them with violence if they celebrated Holi. The incident has resulted in unrest in the region, prompting immediate police intervention and legal action against the accused.

According to local reports, a group of Hindu men, identified as Laxman, Munna, Shani, and Akash, were making arrangements for Holi celebrations in Hajiapur when they were confronted by a group of Muslim youths, including Ayan, Salman, Aman, Rehan, Bhura, and Alam. Eyewitnesses state that the accused not only assaulted the Hindus but also issued dire threats, allegedly warning, “If you celebrate Holi, we will kill you.” The attackers reportedly used sticks during the assault, leaving the victims injured and shaken.

The sudden escalation of violence led to panic among residents, with many fearing a deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony ahead of the Holi festival. The victims claim that the attack was a pre-planned conspiracy to intimidate Hindus and prevent them from participating in traditional festivities.

Upon receiving information about the attack, local police rushed to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. Authorities have taken the matter seriously and have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against six individuals believed to be involved in the violence. Law enforcement officials have already apprehended two suspects, while a search is underway to arrest the remaining accused.

District police officials assured the public that strict action will be taken against those responsible. “We have increased security in the area and are closely monitoring the situation. No one will be allowed to disturb the peace,” a senior police officer stated.

This is not the first time such tensions have erupted in Bareilly. In 2022, during the sacred Hindu month of Saavan, kanwariyas in the Jogi Navada region were targeted with gunfire and stone-pelting while performing religious processions. The Baradari area, including Hajiapur, Jogi Navada, and Chak Mahamood, has witnessed communal conflicts in the past, raising concerns about a potential flare-up ahead of Holi.

Residents of the area are now on edge, fearing another communal clash just days before the festival. “Every year, there are attempts to create disturbances before major Hindu festivals. We just want to celebrate peacefully, but such threats are unsettling,” said a local resident.

In response to the recent attack, the police have heightened security measures, deploying additional personnel to sensitive areas. Patrolling has been intensified, and strict surveillance is in place to prevent any further escalation. “We are committed to ensuring that Holi celebrations go ahead peacefully. Any attempts to incite violence will be dealt with firmly,” a police spokesperson stated.

The situation remains tense but under control as authorities continue their efforts to prevent further communal unrest.
