DIPR of Tamil Nadu stirs row by posting distorted map of Bharat

On December 11, 2024, the Tamil Nadu government found itself at the center of a new controversy after the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) posted a distorted map of Bharat, which omitted the region of Ladakh. The map was part of an official social media post announcing the inauguration of the renovated Thanthai Periyar Memorial and Library at Vaikom, Kerala, by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, alongside Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on December 12, 2024. The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, nationalists, and political observers, who accused the Tamil Nadu government of undermining national integrity.

The Controversial Post and Backlash
The DIPR’s official post, shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), was intended to promote the upcoming inauguration of the Thanthai Periyar Memorial and Library. However, it soon attracted criticism for the map it included. The map, which was intended to illustrate the geographical location of the event, was pointed out by netizens for its omission of Ladakh, a region that is an integral part of India.

BJP leaders quickly seized upon the issue, highlighting the potential implications of such errors. Karthik Gopinath, a BJP media wing functionary, and Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai were among the first to criticize the post.

Annamalai, in a post on X, called the incident a clear sign of the Tamil Nadu government’s disregard for national unity and integrity. “TN DIPR, the unofficial media wing of DMK, has published a distorted map of our country,” he wrote, demanding an apology from the government. “This act reflects the DMK’s disregard for national integrity, and on behalf of @BJP4TamilNadu, we demand that the DMK Government apologize and dare not repeat this,” Annamalai added.

Following a wave of criticism from both the BJP and members of the public, the DIPR swiftly deleted the controversial map and post. However, the damage had already been done, and the incident quickly became a focal point for political debate.

Historical Pattern of Controversies Involving DMK
This is not the first time the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has faced criticism over similar incidents. In November 2024, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was at the center of another controversy when he was seen receiving a shield in the shape of a map of South India, which many perceived as an indirect reference to the “Dravida Nadu” separatist ideology once espoused by the DMK. The shield featured a separate map of South India, which some critics saw as an attempt to revive divisive politics. The BJP accused the DMK of promoting separatism and fueling regional divisions for electoral gain.

“We strongly condemn the incident. Political heirs who seek to divide our nation! In Bharat, which thrives on unity in diversity, the legacy of the DMK has always been to sow discord among people by exploiting their social identities, fueling hatred, and deepening divides,” the BJP tweeted at the time.

The shield incident was reminiscent of DMK’s historical association with the “Dravida Nadu” ideology, a demand for a separate Dravidian state that the party once advocated for. Although the demand for a separate state was abandoned after India’s independence, the DMK has been accused of subtly promoting the idea through various political and cultural actions.

Previous Controversies: Distorted Maps and Separatism Allegations
The controversy over the distorted map is part of a larger pattern of actions that have raised questions about the DMK’s stance on national unity and integrity. In October 2024, the DMK’s NRI wing posted a map of Bharat on social media that allegedly depicted parts of Jammu and Kashmir as ceded to Pakistan and China, and omitted Gujarat, a key economic state. The post was widely condemned, and in the face of intense backlash, the map was deleted and a corrected version was issued.

In another incident earlier in the same year, the Tamil Nadu government’s publicity machinery published an advertisement ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. However, the advertisement featured Chinese rockets alongside other foreign rockets, while no Indian flag or rockets were included. This raised serious concerns about the DMK’s priorities and its stance on national sovereignty.

These incidents have led some political observers to speculate that the DMK, under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin, is attempting to test the waters for more divisive political tactics. While these actions are often defended by the party as mere mistakes or oversights, critics argue that they reflect a deeper ideological stance, one that could undermine the unity of the country.

DMK’s Historical Association with Separatism
The latest incidents involving the DMK come against the backdrop of the party’s historical associations with separatist movements. The party’s founder, CN Annadurai, once advocated for the creation of a separate Dravida Nadu, which would consist of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala. Although the demand for a separate state was abandoned after the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, which made secession illegal, the DMK’s historical association with this ideology has continued to raise concerns.

In recent years, several statements and actions by DMK leaders have reignited these concerns. In 2023, Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister EV Velu admitted that there was once a time when the concept of a separate Dravida Nadu was actively discussed within the party. In another controversial statement, DMK MP M.M. Abdulla proposed the establishment of an independent commission to investigate human rights violations in Kashmir, a statement that was seen as challenging the sovereignty of India.

Moreover, former Union Minister Murasoli Maran’s 1965 book, Why We Need Dravida, outlined the party’s historical commitment to the cause of Dravida Nadu, a vision that would have seen the four southern states break away from India. This history, combined with recent controversial actions, has led critics to accuse the DMK of subtly promoting separatist sentiments.

Political Tensions and Growing Concerns
The growing number of incidents involving the DMK’s controversial actions has led to increased political tensions in Tamil Nadu. The BJP has been particularly vocal in its criticism, accusing the DMK of promoting divisive politics and undermining the unity of the nation. The state’s ruling party has, however, defended itself, arguing that these incidents are mere mistakes or misinterpretations and that the DMK remains committed to the unity and integrity of India.

Nevertheless, these controversies have raised alarm among nationalist groups, who fear that the DMK’s actions are part of a broader attempt to stoke regionalism and promote separatist ideology. Given the party’s historical connections to the Dravida Nadu movement and its occasional flirtations with divisive rhetoric, many are calling on the central government to take a stronger stance against these actions.

The Way Forward: National Unity and Integrity
In the wake of these controversies, the question of national unity remains at the forefront of political discourse in Tamil Nadu. While the DMK has denied any intention of promoting separatism, the repeated incidents involving distorted maps, divisive symbols, and controversial statements suggest that the party may be testing the limits of what is acceptable in the current political climate.

The BJP and other nationalist groups have called for greater vigilance from the central government to ensure that such incidents are not allowed to go unchecked. As India moves toward greater political and economic integration, the need for national unity has never been more pressing. The actions of regional parties like the DMK, which have sometimes appeared to undermine this unity, will continue to be closely scrutinized by both the public and political analysts.
