Karnataka: Congress faces “60 per cent commission” allegations, drawing public outrage and demands for accountability

Congress faces "60 per cent commission" allegations, including bribery within the BBMP and extortion in the liquor industry, drawing public outrage and demands for accountability. The scandal contradicts the party's campaign promises of transparency, leading to a loss of public trust

The Congress administration in Karnataka is facing an onslaught of corruption allegations that suggest a culture of bribery, misuse of funds, and lack of accountability. Despite the party’s strong stance on anti-corruption during their election campaign, recent reports indicate that Congress ministers are now engaged in corrupt practices far beyond those they once condemned. These allegations are striking as Congress had campaigned vigorously against corruption in the previous BJP government, coining slogans like “40 per cent commission” and “PayCM” to criticise the then-ruling party. Now, claims that Congress is involved in a “60 per cent commission” scandal are drawing sharp criticism from opposition leaders, business groups, and the public alike.

BBMP Bribery Scandal

One of the most prominent allegations is directed at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), where officials are accused of demanding a 60% bribe for services such as approving unauthorised advertisements, clearing encroachments on private properties, and providing permits for mobile towers. A letter submitted to the Urban Development Department by Eagle Eye Enforcement Solutions claims that BBMP officials are refusing to process or clear files until the demanded bribes are paid. The letter mentions that officials have even threatened to falsify records or withhold information if the 60 per cent commission bribe is not received, effectively holding the city’s administration hostage to their demands. This raises questions about whether the Congress government is failing to ensure transparency and accountability in its departments.

The Liquor Industry Extortion Allegations

Another corruption scandal emerged when reports surfaced alleging that Congress leaders collected Rs. 700 crores from liquor businesses in exchange for licenses, permits, and favourable policies. Letters from within the liquor industry reveal that Congress officials have pressured vendors to pay significant amounts under the table, marking a severe betrayal of the public trust. Many vendors have expressed frustration and fear, noting that those who refuse to pay face bureaucratic obstacles, delays, or outright denials of licenses. This has sparked outrage among business owners who were hopeful for a business-friendly environment under Congress’s governance.

Opposition Outcry

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted these allegations, drawing national attention to the deteriorating situation in Karnataka. Modi called out Congress for its apparent double standards, noting how Congress leaders were quick to label the BJP as corrupt but are now embroiled in even higher levels of graft. BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, have criticised the Congress administration for its “betrayal of Karnataka’s people,” accusing it of sacrificing integrity for profit. Mysore-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Wodeyar condemned the alleged culture of bribe-taking within BBMP, stressing that Karnataka’s economic progress and reputation are at stake.

Inaction and Neglect: Congress’s Broken Promises

Congress had campaigned on promises of transparency and vowed to eradicate corruption, but these scandals suggest a failure to deliver on those pledges. Many of the current allegations point to Congress’s inability to manage or discipline its own officials, leading to rampant corruption within departments that handle essential services and infrastructure projects. For instance, despite widespread approval for initiatives to clear unauthorised advertisements and regulate mobile towers, the Congress-led BBMP has been accused of dragging its feet, allegedly using red tape as a tool to extract bribes.

Citizens Losing Faith in Congress’s Commitment to Change

Karnataka’s citizens, especially those in Bangalore, are beginning to lose faith in the government’s commitment to clean governance. The apparent pattern of bribe-taking and a lack of accountability have led many to question whether Congress can fulfil its promises. Business owners across multiple sectors have voiced frustration over the growing corruption, which is reportedly increasing the cost of doing business and damaging Bangalore’s reputation as a global business hub.

Public trust in Congress appears to wane as it struggles to manage the BBMP’s corruption scandals and address concerns within the liquor industry. The party’s initial popularity is eroding quickly as citizens see little evidence of the promised transparency and anti-corruption measures. Many fear that Congress’s failure to act decisively could lead to deeper issues, making it difficult to build a stable and trustworthy government in Karnataka.

Pressure Mounting on Congress Leadership

As scandals continue to surface, the Congress leadership is under mounting pressure to respond effectively. State leaders like Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have so far remained relatively silent on the accusations, leading critics to accuse them of attempting to downplay or ignore the corruption within their ranks. Some analysts suggest that this silence is damaging to the party’s credibility, especially given Congress’s vocal criticism of BJP’s alleged corruption in the past.

Calls for Transparency and Accountability

Public figures, opposition leaders, and activists are calling on Congress to take immediate and transparent action. Suggestions include appointing honest officers to investigate the allegations and implementing stricter anti-corruption protocols within BBMP and other departments. There are also calls for Congress leaders to apologise for these scandals and outline a concrete plan to address and prevent corruption.

Congress’s failure to uphold its promises could have significant political repercussions. If the allegations are proven true, it could lead to widespread public outrage and demand for accountability. Congress’s inability to curb corruption within its administration is not only undermining its image but could also damage Karnataka’s economy, reputation, and the well-being of its citizens.

If Congress is to recover from these scandals, it will need to take bold and decisive action to restore public trust. This may involve removing officials found guilty of corruption, revisiting and enforcing stricter policies, and ensuring that Karnataka’s institutions prioritise integrity over profit. With growing pressure from citizens and the opposition, the Congress administration’s next steps could determine the party’s future in Karnataka.

In light of these accusations, the people of Karnataka are watching closely, hoping that Congress can rise above political games and demonstrate real leadership in eradicating corruption within its ranks.
