Pune, June 2, 2026: Thousands of contract workers engaged in the Pune Metro Rail Project will receive revised wages in accordance with the Central Government pay structure following a decision announced at a key meeting chaired by Maharashtra Labour Minister Akash Fundkar.
The decision comes after sustained efforts by the Pune Metro Rail Kamgar Sangh, affiliated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), which had been pursuing the demand for fair wages, implementation of the applicable Central Government wage structure, and resolution of various pending issues concerning contract workers.
Over the past several months, the union held multiple discussions and submitted representations to the government, the Labour Commissioner’s office, Pune Metro authorities and concerned contractors regarding workers’ demands.
A major milestone in the campaign was a large-scale march organised by the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh in Mumbai on April 16, 2026. The demonstration saw participation from a large number of workers from across Maharashtra and drew attention to the issue, leading to further discussions that culminated in the present decision.
During the meeting, discussions were also held on payment of wage arrears, implementation of statutory benefits, service conditions of workers and other pending matters. Information was provided that action on these issues would be undertaken in due course.
The Pune Metro Rail Kamgar Sangh and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh expressed gratitude to Labour Minister Akash Fundkar for taking a positive approach towards workers’ demands and for initiating steps to resolve the issues.
Among those present at the meeting were BMS All India Secretary Anil Dhumne, Maharashtra State General Secretary Kiran Milgir, Pune District President Arjun Chavan, Pune Metro Rail Kamgar Sangh President Ram Suravase, Nikita Dandavate, Kailas More, Maharashtra Vidyut Contract Workers Union President Nilesh Kharat, Umesh Vishwad, and office-bearers representing Pune Metro workers.
Sachin Mengale, General Secretary of the Pune Metro Rail Kamgar Sangh and General Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Theka Mazdoor Mahasangh, stated that Pune Metro workers had achieved this outcome through collective and organised efforts. He said the workers would continue to remain united and pursue efforts related to their inclusion in permanent service in the future.
Union representatives also expressed confidence that the struggle for workers’ rights under the leadership of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh would continue with greater strength in the coming period.
