Uttar Pradesh has taken the lead in issuing Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs, with an impressive total of 12.45 crore IDs issued so far. The state’s efforts in digitising health records have secured it the top spot across the country, as per a press release issued by the State Government on October 24. Maharashtra, coming in second, has issued 5.46 crore ABHA IDs, reflecting a significant gap between the two states.

An Ayushman Bharat Health Account ID is a 14-digit number that provides individuals with digital access to their health records. This initiative is part of India’s ongoing efforts to digitise the healthcare system, ensuring that citizens have easier, more streamlined access to their health information. The ABHA ID serves as a gateway to the creation of a national health database, allowing individuals to seamlessly share their medical history with healthcare providers.

The creation of ABHA IDs is seen as a significant step towards establishing a more efficient healthcare ecosystem. It reduces the dependency on paper-based records, enhances data security, and facilitates continuity of care as patients can share their medical history across different healthcare providers without hassle.

Along with leading in the issuance of ABHA IDs, Uttar Pradesh is also at the forefront in registering healthcare professionals. Various professionals, including doctors, nurses, community health officers (CHOs), auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA workers), are being registered in the Health Professional Registry (HPR). The HPR is a national database that ensures that healthcare providers are authenticated and can offer their services across India.

As of the latest report, 74,789 healthcare professionals have been registered in Uttar Pradesh, overtaking other states. Karnataka, which ranks second in professional registrations, has recorded 58,919 healthcare professionals in its database. This achievement reflects the state’s commitment to improving access to healthcare by ensuring that its workforce is fully accounted for and easily accessible to the public.

In addition to ABHA ID registrations and professional enrollments, Uttar Pradesh is leading the way in the Health Facility Registry (HFR). The HFR is a digital directory that requires registration by all healthcare institutions, hospitals, sub-centres, clinics, and diagnostic centres. The registry ensures that every health facility in the country is mapped and can be easily located by the public.

With 61,015 facilities already registered, Uttar Pradesh has achieved 100 per cent registration of all Government healthcare institutions. This includes hospitals, sub-centres, and clinics, ensuring that citizens have comprehensive access to the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

In contrast, Karnataka has registered approximately 60,743 facilities, securing its place just behind Uttar Pradesh in terms of facility registrations. This level of organisation in healthcare infrastructure is critical to ensuring that every citizen can find and access healthcare services when needed.

In line with the Government’s efforts to make healthcare more accessible, Uttar Pradesh ranks first in the nation in the Scan and Share Model. This initiative allows for easy sharing of health records using QR codes, significantly reducing the administrative burden on both patients and healthcare providers. Over 1.42 crore OPD tokens have been generated so far. Patients can scan a QR code to securely share their medical history with healthcare professionals, ensuring that doctors and healthcare staff have up-to-date information on diagnoses, treatments, and medications. The digitisation of healthcare through the issuance of ABHA IDs and the establishment of HPR and HFR databases represents a massive transformation in India’s healthcare sector. The focus is on ensuring that healthcare becomes more accessible, efficient, and transparent, reducing gaps in medical care and improving overall health outcomes.

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, under which these efforts fall, is part of a larger vision to create a robust digital health ecosystem in India. This digital health mission is key to the future of healthcare in India, offering significant improvements in how healthcare is delivered and experienced by millions of citizens.

The success of Uttar Pradesh in both issuing ABHA IDs and registering healthcare facilities and professionals points to the effectiveness of the state’s implementation of the national health mission. By ensuring that its citizens and healthcare professionals are fully integrated into these digital platforms, Uttar Pradesh is setting an example for other states to follow.

With more than 12.45 crore ABHA IDs issued and full registration of Government healthcare facilities, the state has positioned itself as a leader in India’s digital health revolution. These initiatives, combined with efforts to promote the Scan and Share Model, mark a significant milestone in improving healthcare access and quality in Uttar Pradesh. As other states continue to work towards similar goals, the efforts seen in Uttar Pradesh serve as a benchmark for the rest of the nation. The digitisation of healthcare in India is poised to have a lasting impact on how healthcare services are delivered, ensuring that every citizen can access quality healthcare seamlessly and efficiently.
