Russian President Putin renews Su-57 offer to India; Signals full access to 5th gen stealth fighter jet technology

As India aims to consolidate national security and navigate the geopolitical challenges, Moscow has pitched a major defence deal, which can act as a strategic saviour in redefining the security architecture of India. Russia has offered co-production of the 5th generation stealth fighter Su-57, including sharing of the secret code & critical technologies underlining the weapon system. If rationalised, this could add immense strength to India’s defence indigenisation goal & the capabilities of the airforce in emerging warfare

Russia pitches for the co-production of Fifth Generation Su-57 with India

The evolving geopolitical landscape in an increasingly contentious way and the emerging nature of modern warfare illustrates a strategic fact that the new age military weapons are pivotal to consolidate national security and territorial integrity. In this direction, India is looking for a 5th generation fighter aircraft to compound the offensive and defensive capabilities of the Indian Airforce with cutting-edge military technology and thereby gain a strategic edge against intruding adversaries.

Amidst these geopolitical calculations of India, Moscow has pitched a mega defence deal with New Delhi. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated that the country is willing to jointly develop and produce 5th generation stealth fighter Su-57 with India. Moscow’s this big defence offer to India, will indeed act as a strategic advantage to accelerate India’s overarching military goals such as defence indigenisation, transfer of critical defence technology, carving the nation as a major regional military power & defence hub coupled with consolidating national security against geopolitical hiccups.

🚨🇷🇺🇮🇳 Putin reveals that Russia offered Su-57 to India as a joint project

The timing of the offer from the Russian President Putin is critical and worth noting, as Moscow pitches for the mega Su-57 deal, while the Indian Airforce is rigorously looking for a 5th generation fighter aircraft to successfully etch strategic edge and deterrence amidst escalating unpredictability and animosity across the geopolitical spectrum. If rationalised, the Su57 deal with Russia, will indeed boost the offensive and defensive capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The Russian offer also reflects the growing strategic importance of India as a trusted & credible defence partner & regional player.

Russia ready for cooperation with no limits: A key to transfer critical & secret defence technologies

“We are ready to supply India with this aircraft, to keep developing it. We don’t have any issues or limitations. The same goes for air defence systems”, said Russian President Vladimir Putin. This statement illustrates the time-tested New Delhi-Moscow ties especially in the defence sector as credible partners. Also, the statement reflects the depth of Russia’s aspiration to collaborate with India in the defence domain. “We are ready to work with India in this field”, the Russian President further added.

The usage of the word “with no limitations or issues”, embeds the strategic message that in the path of co-development and co-production of the Su-57 stealth fighter, Russia is ready for transfer of critical technology and the source code and there are no restrictions. This renders significant leverage to the defence ambitions of India, in terms of gaining edge in the state-of-the-art military technologies and producing it indigenously to conceal national and larger regional security. This high-voltage defence offer by Russia also illustrates its growing confidence in India as a trusted partner to convulse collective security and balance of power.

A strategic & military salience against multi-front confrontation

If finalised, the Su-57 deal could channelise a major boost to India in its geopolitical calculations. It will specifically act as a kinetic engine for India to defend against the two-front or multi-front confrontation which is silently but evidently brewing from the Chinese and Pakistani border. Such state-of-the-art stealth fighters will help to carve a strong strategic deterrence against cross-border atrocities and defend the sovereignty, national security and territorial integrity of India.

Also, China is rapidly advancing with its 5th generation fighter jets. Beijing is rigorously modernising its airforce fleet by deploying J-20 stealth fighters. On the other hand, Pakistan is aiming to purchase the F-35 fighter aircraft from the United States and China’s Shenyang J-35AE stealth fighter, which is also a fifth-generation military aircraft.

While India’s most detrimental neighbours are evolving with cutting-edge defence systems, it is inevitable for New Delhi to equip with 5th generation fighter aircrafts as a symbol of strategic deterrence, balance of power and a national security fort. This will help thwart the multi-front confrontation challenge of India. In this backdrop, Russia’s pitch for co-production of Su-57 seeks importance.

Su-57: A stimulate to modernise and the upgrade Indian Airforce

Su-57 is developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau and is Moscow’s first operational fifth generation stealth fighter. In terms of operational capabilities, Su-57 is considered as equivalent to American F-22 Raptor, sensor fusion  and F-35 Lightning 2. It is also deemed as equally potent to China’s fifth generation fighter aircraft. It has supersonic cruising capability, advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems with long-range strike capability.

It is highly flexible and adaptable and can perform multiple roles such as air superiority missions, ground attack, electronic warfare and long-range precision strikes. Su-57 also has low radar observability, advanced avionics, sensor fusion and is capable of sustained supersonic flights without afterburns. It also has high manoeuvrability and has potential to carry air-to-ground and air-to-air weapons.

If rationalised, the India-Russia Su-57 defence deal is potent to rewrite the dynamics of the great power competition across the regional security apparatus. It will give massive impetus to the defence indigenisation capabilities of India as there is an anticipated transfer of secret or critical embedding technology. It will act as an imperative to strengthen national security and ensure strategic prudence in the region by containing geopolitical aggression.
