Ayurveda, the ancient healing system of Bharat, offers a holistic approach to health that emphasises balance between the mind, body, and spirit. While much focus has been placed on Ayurvedic treatments for physical ailments, there is a growing awareness about its potential in boosting the immune system, particularly in relation to the nervous system. The concept of Ojas (vital energy) plays a significant role in this regard, with Ayurvedic practices designed to strengthen the nervous system and enhance overall immunity.

The nervous system is the body’s command center, responsible for transmitting signals between different parts of the body. It controls functions such as movement, thought processes, and responses to stimuli, while also managing the body’s stress response. A well-functioning nervous system is crucial not only for maintaining physical health but also for mental well-being. Chronic stress, anxiety, and other emotional disturbances can weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to illnesses.

In Ayurveda, nervous system health is deeply intertwined with the mind-body connection. The immune system’s efficiency is influenced by mental clarity, emotional balance, and the body’s vitality. Therefore, strengthening the nervous system can indirectly fortify the body’s overall immunity, preventing a host of diseases that arise from stress and mental exhaustion.

Ayurveda categorises human physiology into three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The nervous system is primarily governed by Vata, the dosha associated with movement, communication, and energy flow. When Vata is imbalanced, individuals may experience symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, and even neurological disorders. Strengthening and balancing Vata is key to improving nervous system health.

Ayurvedic Remedies to Immunise the Nervous System

  • Herbs: Several Ayurvedic herbs are known to support the nervous system and enhance immunity. Ashwagandha, a powerful adaptogen, is renowned for reducing stress, calming the mind, and boosting cognitive function. It enhances the body’s resilience to stress, thereby fortifying immunity. Brahmi is another herb that nourishes the nervous system, improves memory, and reduces anxiety. It helps maintain mental clarity while balancing Vata dosha.
  • Diet: A Vata-balancing diet, rich in warm, cooked, and mildly spiced foods, is essential for nervous system health. Healthy fats like ghee and sesame oil are particularly beneficial as they nourish the nervous tissue and enhance Ojas. Reducing caffeine and avoiding processed foods also prevent further aggravation of Vata.
  • Yoga and Meditation: Practicing specific yoga asanas, such as Shavasana (Corpse Pose) and Padmasana (Lotus Pose), calms the mind and soothes the nervous system. Regular meditation practices, such as Pranayama (breath control), help manage stress and restore balance in the mind, preventing nervous system imbalances from taking root.
  • Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Daily self-massage with warm, medicated oils, particularly sesame or Brahmi oil, helps stabilize Vata, reduces stress, and improves circulation to the nerves. This not only strengthens the nervous system but also enhances immunity.
