Raipur: In a significant development reported from Durg district of Chhattisgarh, Bhilai Municipal Corporation has acted strongly against illegal encroachment done near zone 3 office on GE road.

Hundreds of workers of the corporation accompanied with bulldozers reached near Karbala ground in early hours of Monday September 9 and bulldozed several structures including a towering gate, a marriage hall and several shops built illegally, the action has been taken in accordance with a court’s order linked to illegal encroachment.

According to the reports, the government had allocated around 800 square feet of land for use of religious purpose under Special Area Development Authority (SADA) in the year 1984, though the Karbala committee has allegedly encroached an area of 2.5 acres and built many illegal structures ranging from shops to marriage hall.

The officials of the corporation have been long receiving complaints of illegal encroachment and commercial use of the land allotted for religious purpose and several notices about the same had already been issued to the committee who oversee the structures erected there, though no concrete action was taken in this regard.

The latest of these notices were issued recently providing a three-day ultimatum to remove the illegal encroachment on the said land, however following inaction by the committee, the corporation officials commence the bulldozer action on Monday morning.

As per the inputs received, a number of shops, a boundary-wall, a gate and a few other non-religious structure have already been bulldozed by the corporation’s officials amidst heavy deployment of security personnel, the drive against the encroachment is expected to continue for a few more hours.

It’s been speculated that the cost of the land encroached illegally amounts to hundreds of crores which was in illegal occupation for many years, though official confirmation and the details of the anti-encroachment drive are still awaited
