Guwahati: A shocking incidence of sexual assault on a female student at a university in southern Assam has everyone on edge, even as the country works to bring justice to the doctor who was the victim of the RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. A troubling case of sexual harassment has surfaced in the Silchar district of Assam where a female student was sexually assaulted by an autorickshaw driver Badrujaman Farooq.
On August 19, a female research scholar from Assam University was allegedly harassed by the auto-rickshaw driver midway to her home, taking advantage of an isolated road. She boarded the vehicle driven by Badrujaman Farooq, who asked her to sit in the front seat despite her initial reluctance. Farooq allegedly attempted to molest her midway through the ride. After repeated requests of the female student, auto driver Badrujaman didn’t stopped the vehicle and took her through an isolated road. Throughout the road, he was harassing the university student.
The student managed to flee and reported the incident to the police and college authorities. A manhunt was initiated by fellow students and the University student union, who managed to track down and apprehend the autorickshaw driver. Later the students turned over Farooq to the police on Tuesday night. The accused, a resident of Bakirnagar in Cachar, is currently being held by the police.
Tension has arisen on campus as a result of the incident, and students are calling for the local authorities and police to guarantee their safety. The police are looking into the situation and prosecuting the suspects as needed.
