Kerala: Ex-Delhi Minorities Commission Chief Safarul Islam’s remark on Hamas leader Ismail Hania sparks controversy

The love for the Arab world by many Indian Muslims was never a secret. Safarul Islam, the former chief of the Delhi Minorities Commission, is known for that and his statements imply that he holds immense love and respect for Islamic countries, terrorist lover Zakir Naik, and Hamas leaders.

Now, this time Safarul Islam, went on to pay tributes to Ismail Hania, a senior and prominent Hamas leader, by describing him as a ‘martyr’. Iran confirmed the death of Ismail Hania in Tehran.

Reacting to this, Safarul Islam on his X stated that “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioun. Hamas head Ismail Haniyya was assassinated. Most probably by Israel which has a very long history of assassinations starting with the UN mediator Bernadotte in Sept 1948. Here Haniyyah is reading a verse from the Quran saying martyrs are not dead.”

Earlier, the same Safarul Islam Khan eulogized Zakir Naik despite his infamous Islamist, anti-Hindu, and anti-national hate speeches. He claimed that preachers like Zakir Naik and others command respect in Arab countries and the Muslim world.

It is to be remembered that Zakir Naik has been facing multiple cases which are being probed by the country’s premier anti-terror agency, NIA, and the Enforcement Directorate. Money laundering is one among them. His name came up in the Dhaka Café bombing of 2016. Two Kerala youths who joined the Islamic State said that they drew inspiration from Zakir Naik. The Dhaka bomb blast of July 2016 was a significant point in his religious life. He fled the country within hours. One of the bombers told the Bangladeshi investigators, during interrogation, that Zakir Naik’s YouTube speeches influenced them. Zakir Naik did not return to Bharat afterward as he is on the list of most-wanted fugitives. Now, he is in Malaysia as a permanent resident since Britain and Canada refused to accept him as a resident.

In Kerala, a trust-run chain of schools revealed Zakir Naik’s involvement through the syllabus they followed. The syllabus was alleged to be anti-secular and anti-national. Later, the trustees made an unusual argument that they were only trustees and were not responsible for the syllabus that the schools used.

In November 2023, Safarul Islam Khan supported Qatar’s decision to award capital punishment to eight former Bharatiya Navy officers

Reports suggest that a special cell of Delhi Police had registered the case against Safarul Islam Khan under IPC Section 124A for anti-national activities and under IPC Section 153A for spreading religious enmity and ill-will among religions.

Therefore, it is not at all strange that Safarul Islam Khan considers the Islamic terrorist Hamas leader as a martyr and Zakir Naik as a great religious preacher.
