Assam will become a Muslim majority state by 2041, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. According to Assam Chief Minister Sarma, the state’s Muslim population is growing by at least 29 to 30 per cent per ten years, and the state will have a majority of Muslims by 2041. “There is statistical evidence of an increase in the Muslim population in Assam,” stated CM Sarma in Guwahati. Muslims are increasing in number at a far faster rate than Hindus, and if this trend continues, they will account for the majority by 2041.
“Hindu population increase is 16 per cent,” he continued. In 2011, Muslims made up 1.40 crore of the Assamese population. If that number rises by 30 per cent by 2021, how many will there be? The number of Muslims surpasses that of Hindus by 16 per cent every decade. The number of Muslims increases by 22 lakh every ten years. He clarified that these are Census data, not figures he had created. It is true that Assam will have a majority of Muslims by 2041.
In a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, CM Sarma stated, “The Congress has the most important role in arresting the growth of the Muslim population.” It will be contained if Rahul Gandhi takes on the role of brand ambassador for population control because the community only pays attention to him. CM Sama recently stated, “Changing demography is a big issue for me,” when he was in Jharkhand. Muslims currently make up about 40 per cent of the population of Assam. It was 12 per cent in 1951. For me, this is a matter of life and death rather than a political issue, he declared.
Bypassing the Assam Repealing Bill 2024, the Assamese Government agreed on Thursday to abolish the 1935 Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act and Rules. The upcoming monsoon session of the state assembly will see the government present legislation. Thursday was the state cabinet meeting. “We have taken a significant step to ensure justice for our daughters and sisters by putting additional safeguards against child marriage,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in X. We have resolved to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act and Rules 1935 through the Assam Repealing Bill 2024 during today’s state cabinet meeting.
He clarified, saying, “The Assam Repealing Bill, 2024, which aims to abolish the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935 and Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Rules, 1935, has received assent from the State Cabinet in order to bring parity in the registration of marriage and divorce. The bill will be brought up for discussion at the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Monsoon Session. Also, the State Cabinet has ordered that appropriate legislation be introduced so that Muslim marriages in Assam can be registered; this law would be reviewed by the Assembly during its subsequent session.
