Bajrang Dal worker murder case in Chhattisgarh: BJP Minister seeks SIT probe; VHP warns of a statewide agitation

Days after a Bajrang Dal worker, Sujit Swarnkar, alias Sujit Soni’s body, was traced near a highway in Dumrukhi, Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh, in mysterious circumstances on May 27, the row over the suspected murder of the Hindu activist has now intensified in the state.

Protesting against the initial theory given by the police that Sujit along with a woman were accidentally electrocuted by a trap set up by a few villagers when the latter were out on a hunting exercise, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has now warned for a state wide agitation into the matter.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Vishnu Deo Sai, submitted via district magistrate, the Durg unit of VHP has warned for a statewide agitation in case of inaction by the administration in such cases.

Further, while alleging that Sujit and the woman were killed brutally as part of a larger conspiracy due to former crusade against cow smuggling, the VHP in the letter has also indicated about the surge of such incidents pertaining to love Jihad and cow smuggling in the state.

This comes days after the Chhattisgarh unit of VHP, in a press release, also alleged that the deceased Bajrang Dal worker Sujit was receiving constant threat from the cow smugglers, about which he had also informed to the senior office bearers of VHP and the police.

While demanding for stringent action against the culprits and a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the matter, VHP had alleged that there were injury marks on the body of Sujit, while one of his fingers was also broken up, indicating torture before his murder.

The press release further stated that the elder sister of the woman killed along with Sujit had also received a call from an alleged cow smuggler, Sonu Khan, at around 1am in the night suggesting about a larger conspiracy into the double murder.

Meanwhile, speaking with the Organiser, national spokesperson of the VHP, Vinod Bansal, said that our demand is clear, a fair investigation into the matter should be initiated and the murderers should be nabbed immediately.

“No innocent people should be tried in the case and if there are people in the local administration who are trying to hide their sins by fabricating stories, then the government should also look into it seriously,” added Bansal.

Now, after the persistent demand of VHP and the local residents for a high-level enquiry into the case, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Minister for Tribal Affairs, Agriculture Development and Farmer Welfare, Ramvichar Netam, who also represents the Ramanujganj constituency of Balrampur, has now written a letter to the Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, Vijay Sharma, for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) enquiry into the matter.

In the letter, Netam has pointed out that although the police are probing the matter and arrested a few suspects in the case, in accordance with the public sentiments and demands of the family members of deceased, it looks necessary that a high level inquiry be done into the case.

The minister in the letter has further suggested that the investigation should be headed by an officer of IG (Inspector General of Police) rank who, along with other officials and forensic experts, should visit the spot of the crime and submit its report after a thorough enquiry within seven days.

गृहमंत्री श्री @vijaysharmacg जी को… pic.twitter.com/XuoGWRES3o

It is noteworthy that the suspected murder of Bajrang Dal worker Soni and a woman had triggered massive protest from the local Hindu outfits and the residents in the bordering district of Balrampur.

Following the murder, which is suspected to have been carried out in the intervening night of May 26-27, the police detained as many as three suspects for their alleged involvement in the crime. However, the arrest made by the police did not go well with the locals and Hindu outfits, who staged a strong protest against the police and administration on Thursday, May 30.

The protestors jammed the highway in the town and expressed disbelief over the initial theory given by police into the matter. Later on, VHP members while demanding a fair probe into the matter, issued a press release and hinted about a possible conspiracy in the case given the constant threats received by Sujit.
